The Queen of the Night is nondescript most of the year, resembling a gray/green skinny stick with small ridges along spindly arms. Once a year, they produce white, long-petaled flowers with long, delicate creamy yellow stamen that looks like little fireworks. They smell HEAVENLY - like milk and honey.
I never cease to be amazed by the "Queen of the Night" - the Sonoran Desert's night-blooming #cereus (Peniocereus greggii) - and how nearly all the desert's plants orchestrate a synchronous bloom.
The whole deserts' worth of naturally growing cacti all bloomed last night!
This is a true marvel of nature. This Cereus looks like a vine choking these trees 364 days of the year but for just ONE magical night it opens up to this amazing bloom until dawn!!

With a little help from my trusty flashlight I was able to capture this Night Blooming #Cereus after it opened. These #plants only #bloom for one night. The #flower closes as the sun begins to rise. This one is extremely fragrant. The perfume lingers the next day.

Erect, cylindrical, segmented, glaucous light green shoots of a cactus branch out from near the base. Quite a few large white flowers protrude from the branches and many more can be seen, having finished flowering. The cactus is set in a begonia garden. There is a single story, bullnose verandah behind and a neighbouring two story terrace house wall and chimney. The sky is dark and a single star can be see over the cactus
