Chapter 10 of my comic, Aria of Stars and Snow. This chapter has Wistaria, Rain, and Janae. Wistaria is a kid with light skin, hair with bangs and two sections that stick out to the sides, white mittens, a hat with white brim, a striped scarf, a zipped jacket, purple baggy pants and purple boots. Rain has dark skin and sparkly eyes, pointy ears, long, lighter purple hair, a sparkly knee length dress with a belt, little clouds at the ankles and purple Mary Jane style shoes. Janae has large circle glasses and dark hair tied into twin buns, a purple puffer jacket with mittens, a dark purple flowy skirt, leggings, white boots with a dark purple top and bottom and stripe in the middle. One bun has a stick going through it. Panel 1: Wistaria sprinting through the dark forest. Panel 2: Wistaria continues to run looking forward, not noticing the large part of the ground jutting up. Panel 3: Wistaria has tripped on the tall part of ground and is falling forward with no control and she cries out “A-AH!” Panel 4: She’s fallen to the ground, hard. Mud splashes around and she falls on her arm. She looks pained and her hat flies off. She cries out again, saying “Aaagh!” Panel 5: A zoomed out view of the forest, very dark and Wistaria sits with one leg out, cradling her injured hand, saying “Ow…” before being interrupted by “There you are” in Rain’s voice. Panel 6: Hearing Rain, Wistaria looks even more afraid and yells “S-Stay away! Get out of my head!” Panel 7: Rain has emerged from the forest, looking determined and with wings, small, glowing, and feathered. They say “In your head? I can’t actually read minds, it’s j-“ and then they see Wistaria and say “Hang on, you’re hurt! And you look… terrified.” Panel 8: Rain looks concerned as they say “I don’t know what’s going on in your head… Janae and I aren’t going to hurt you, alright?” Panel 9: Rain looks back as Janae emerges from the forest. Janae asks “Did you find her?!” And Rain says “Yeah, but she’s hurt. Come help me out!”

Darth Maul – ‘Star Wars’ Character Spotlight Darth Maul is one of the most iconic characters in _Star Wars_ , but fans who don’t watch the animated shows might be surprised to learn that the Sith Lord has a lot more story than just what you see in _The Phantom Menace_ , stretching all the way into the reign of the Empire. This _Star Wars_ Character Spotlight aims to cover all that. At the time of writing, this does not include the upcoming animated series _Maul: Shadow Lord_ , but if you want to know everything else about Maul’s story outside the films, look no further. ## **Sith apprentice** Maul was born and raised on Dathomir from 54 BBY, living in a Zabrak Nightbrother village with his brothers Feral and Savage Opress. We do not know his original name or how he was created, but the _Darth Maul – Son of Dathomir_ comic miniseries tells us how he came to be Palpatine’s apprentice. Mother Talzin, the Nightsister matriarch, had allied with Darth Sidious decades before the events of the films and exchanged secrets of the Force with him. She believed that Sidious would make her his apprentice, only for him to meet a 14-year-old Zabrak. Sidious noticed that the child was strong in the Force and saw a weapon that he could use against the Jedi. Sidious stole the boy from Talzin, and made an enemy of the Nightsisters. He instructed him in the Sith ways, training him in combat and bestowing upon him the name Darth Maul. The 2017 _Darth Maul_ comic miniseries chronicles part of this training. It sends Darth Maul on a mission to capture and kill his first Jedi padawan, working with bounty hunters Cad Bane, Aurra Sing and others. After causing chaos at the auction that was selling the captured padawan off, he chased the Jedi to a nearby moon and the two fought. Though the Jedi appeared to bury him in a landslide, he soon killed her. One story shows Sidious bringing Maul to Malachor, visiting the site of an ancient battle between Sith and Jedi. As Maul experienced visions of Sith being killed by Jedi, he felt an intense hatred that Sidious taught him to harness. That sense of hatred and need for revenge against the Jedi was also fueled by him believing that the Jedi had spurned him, that in not attempting to recruit him, the Jedi thought they were better than him. It would come to define Maul’s personality. Darth Maul has a brief cameo in _The Living Force_ novel, appearing at the end to seemingly kill the seneschal of the Jedi outpost on Kwenn, who had been secretly sending Jedi reading materials to Palpatine. It seems that while Palpatine considered Maul a useful weapon, he had loftier ideas for what his ideal apprentice would look like. Maul would do for now. ## **The Phantom Menace** This is the part of Darth Maul’s story that everyone knows. Darth Sidious sent his apprentice to eliminate the Jedi that were ruining his plans to blockade Naboo and erode confidence in Chancellor Valorum. After fighting Qui-Gon Jinn on Tatooine, Maul ambushed them at the end of the film on Naboo. After an epic fight, he killed Qui-Gon. This enraged Obi-Wan, who cut him in half with his lightsaber, sending him tumbling down a gigantic trash chute. The Jedi thought the Sith Lord was dead, but this was not the case. Darth Maul survived through Nightsister magick and sheer willpower, using his hatred for the Jedi and strength in the dark side to cling onto life, even without half his body. He landed in a pile of trash which was transported to the junk planet Lotho Minor, where he lived for the next 11-12 years. ## **Insanity and revenge** At some point over the next decade, Darth Maul went insane. With the help of a local creature, he grafted mechanical spider-like legs onto his body and lived in isolation on Lotho Minor, feeding off whatever food the creature could bring him. That isolation sent him spiralling into insanity, as he became consumed by his hatred for the Jedi but unable to do anything about it. Eventually, he was discovered by his brother Savage Opress in Season 4 of _The Clone Wars_. It took Savage a while to break through to his brother, who he found babbling incoherently and scurrying through corridors, with his overgrown horns and crazed eyes. After some effort, Savage broke through and Maul came to. He realized his master and the galaxy had moved on without him. All he had left was his hatred for Obi-Wan Kenobi who had cost him his place with the Sith, and now hatred for the master who had abandoned him. He resolved to kill Sidious and Dooku, and take their place as Sith ruling the galaxy with his brother as his apprentice. But first, after Talzin restored a portion of his sanity and gave him new cybernetic legs, he would have his revenge on Kenobi. He set a trap for Obi-Wan, killing civilians on Raydonia and sending a message for Kenobi to come face him. Obi-Wan did come and was captured. He would have been killed, had Asajj Ventress not rescued him. The pair teamed up but were still no match for both Maul and Opress, and were forced to flee. ## **The Shadow Collective** Having missed his chance to kill Kenobi for now, Darth Maul set his sights on his larger goal; conquering the galaxy. As Sidious controlled an entire galactic government, he knew he would need a similarly large force. He resolved to control the galaxy’s criminal underworld and planned to unite all the syndicates and cartels under his rule. His first choice in ally was a smaller one, as he traveled to Florrum with Savage to recruit the Hondo Ohnaka Gang to his cause. He bribed the gang into joining him, throwing their leader Hondo Ohnaka in a cell. Obi-Wan and Adi Gallia soon arrived on Florrum following Maul’s trail, and Maul fought his nemesis once more. Savage Opress killed Gallia but Obi-Wan managed to turn the tide by severing Opress’ arm. The two brothers were forced to flee, as Maul lost one of his new robot legs trying to protect Savage. In Season 5, we see that Maul and Savage managed to escape Florrum in an escape pod that was eventually found by Death Watch. Their leader Pre Viszla decided to ally with the Zabraks after discovering they were enemies of the Jedi, hoping to get their help in seizing control of Mandalore, which was ruled by Duchess Satine Kryze, an old flame of Obi-Wan’s from his days as a padawan. Maul outlined his plans to create the Shadow Collective, a collection of criminal syndicates under his rule. With Viszla and Savage in tow, he journeyed to the Black Sun and Pyke Syndicates and the Hutt Cartel, successfully bringing the first two under his banner through intimidation. The Hutts proved more stubborn however, and they were forced to flee Nal Hutta when the Hutt Council tried to have them killed. _Star Wars Adventures_ #3 also tells the tale of how Maul brought the smaller Morubas Crime Family under his control. ## **Ruler of Mandalore** Maul finally had his army, and agreed to help Death Watch overthrow Duchess Satine and take Mandalore. He promised that once this was done, he would leave Mandalore out of his Shadow Collective, but secretly he intended no such thing. Their plan to take Mandalore went off without a hitch, though Pre Viszla betrayed Maul and Savage by throwing them in prison. They soon broke out, and Maul challenged Viszla to a duel, knowing that victory would win him the darksaber and leadership of Death Watch. He won, beheading Viszla with the darksaber. Maul now ruled the entire Mandalorian population, governing in secret with the Prime Minister as his figurehead. Duchess Satine sent a distress call to the Jedi immediately, and Maul decided to use her as bait to lure Obi-Wan to him again. Though Obi-Wan managed to break Satine out of prison, they were eventually captured by Mandalorian forces and brought back to the throne room. There, Maul toyed with Kenobi, daring him to give into the dark side as he slowly Force-choked Satine. Obi-Wan attempted to reason with Maul but this only angered him. He stabbed Satine in the chest, killing her. Obi-Wan was devastated; Maul had him thrown in prison, though he soon escaped. Unfortunately for Maul, news of his success reached the ears of Darth Sidious. He saw his former padawan as a threat that needed to be eliminated, and traveled to Mandalore himself. He fought both Maul and Savage in the throne room, killing Savage and capturing Maul. Sidious would not reinstate Maul as his apprentice, instead planning to use him to lure Mother Talzin out into the open so he could kill her for good. He had Maul taken to a high security prison on Stygeon Prime until he could enact his plan. While this happened, Bo-Katan Kryze’s forces managed to take Mandalore back from Maul’s forces. ## **Escaping Sidious** The following story was supposed to be told in _The Clone Wars_ , but following the animated series’ temporary cancellation, it was told in the comic miniseries _Son of Dathomir_ instead. Maul was swiftly broken out of prison by his Mandalorian Shadow Collective loyalists Gar Saxon and Rook Kast, who returned the darksaber to him. Maul still had a claim to Mandalore. Following an initial skirmish with General Grievous‘ droid forces, Maul contacted Mother Talzin for guidance. She instructed him to head to Ord Mantell for another battle where he would be reinforced by Nightbrothers. Maul won that battle and captured both Grievous and Count Dooku. With both Dooku and Grievous captured, Maul attempted to convince Dooku to join him, but the Count rejected his proposal. When Republic forces attacked, Dooku worked with Maul to avoid capture by the Jedi and escaped in the chaos. Maul returned to Dathomir with Dooku in tow. Mother Talzin drained Dooku’s life force in order to return to her physical form. With Dooku incapacitated, Grievous and Sidious arrived, intending to kill both Talzin and Maul. Maul and his mother lost, with Grievous killing Talzin once and for all while Maul was dragged away by his Death Watch loyalists. ## **Return to Mandalore** Somehow, Maul managed to keep hold of the Shadow Collective and added Crimson Dawn to its ranks near the end of the war. Though we don’t know exactly how, Maul returned to Mandalore and resumed control of the planet. Bo-Katan asked the Republic for aid. Maul had expected that the Jedi would send either Obi-Wan or Anakin Skywalker to face him, and was happy killing either one of them to get revenge on Kenobi. However, instead they sent to former Jedi Ahsoka Tano. The Republic forces soon gained a foothold on the planet and Ahsoka found Maul in the throne room, where he hoped to persuade her to join his cause. He knew that Sidious’ plan to rule the galaxy was about to come to fruition and wanted Anakin’s former student on his side. Ahsoka rejected his proposal and resolved to arrest him. Maul resisted and the two fought; he was soon captured but made it clear he would rather die than become Sidious’ prisoner once again. Ahsoka placed him in captivity on board a Venator headed for Coruscant. During hyperspace, Sidious enacted Order 66 and the clone troopers all turned on Ahsoka. Ahsoka freed Maul from prison, hoping he would cause enough chaos that she could escape unnoticed. Maul cut swathes through the clone troopers even without his lightsaber, as he destroyed the Venator’s engines and escaped the ship in its one remaining shuttle. ## **Early days of the Empire** _Maul: Shadow Lord_ is about to tell us what Maul got up to in the Empire’s early days, but we know that the Empire dispatched inquisitors to hunt him down. Thankfully, the novel _Crimson Climb_ tells us that the Shadow Collective forces disbanded in the years after the war, with Maul only retaining control of Crimson Dawn. He met Qi’ra of Crimson Dawn while he was based on Dathomir. Though he still held the darksaber, he kept it in his lair and stayed away from the Mandalorians. He taught Qi’ra many things about the Force and trained her in combat. Maul gets a brief cameo in _Solo: A Star Wars Story_ , as he learns that Qi’ra has usurped Dryden Vos as leader of the syndicate. He talks with her briefly via hologram before disappearing. He went on to teach her many things about the Force and how to fight against the Sith. We don’t really know what happened to Maul after this, but years later he lost control of Crimson Dawn. The _Stories of Jedi and Sith_ book explains how he got stranded on Malachor before the events of _Star Wars Rebels_. Maul became obsessed with hunting down a Sith holocron. His quest to find it brought him back to Malachor, where his ship was damaged beyond repair and left him stranded there. It would appear that Qi’ra took control of Crimson Dawn in his absence. ## **Star Wars Rebels** Maul made his big return to _Star Wars_ in the Disney era when he popped up in the big finale to _Star Wars Rebels_ Season 2. He was hiding from the inquisitor Eighth Brother when Ahsoka showed up on Malachor with Jedi Ezra Bridger and Kanan Jarrus, who were in turn being hunted by the Seventh Sister and Fifth Brother. When Ezra became separated from his allies, he stumbled across Maul inside the planet’s Sith temple. Maul hid his true identity from Ezra, manipulating him to make him believe he was simply a kindly old man seeking the same Sith holocron that he was. Ezra trusted him and the pair of them recovered the holocron together. They took it and left the temple, only to find Ahsoka and Kanan fighting the inquisitors outside. Maul decided to aid Ezra and his friends, hoping to turn the boy into his new apprentice. He easily incapacitated the Seventh Sister by Force-choking her, imploring Ezra to strike her down in cold blood. Ezra couldn’t bring himself to do it, so Maul did it himself. He killed the Fifth Brother too, while the Eighth Brother fell to his death as he attempted to flee. With the inquisitors out of the way, Maul attempted to kill Kanan so that he could supplant himself as Ezra’s new master, but after blinding him with his lightsaber, Ahsoka stepped in while Kanan recovered. At this point, both Maul and Ahsoka could sense Darth Vader’s presence on Malachor. Ahsoka left to prevent the temple’s ancient weapon from firing, while Kanan resolved to hold him off. Despite being blind, Kanan relied on his other senses and tripped Maul, sending him careening over the cliff edge. Beaten, Maul decided to leave in the Eighth Brother’s ship. He fled the planet and resolved to contact Ezra later, who still had the Sith holocron and was tempted by the dark side. ## **Searching for Kenobi** Maul returned in Season 3, attacking the _Ghost_ and capturing its crew to demand an audience with Ezra. He knew that if he combined the Sith holocron with the Jedi holocron also in Ezra’s possession, they could ask any question and the Force would answer. Ezra begrudgingly agreed to help Maul, and the two opened both holocrons. At first, Maul couldn’t understand what he was seeing through the Force; he had asked it to show him Obi-Wan Kenobi. Though Ezra broke the connection with the holocrons, Maul finally glimpsed something and understood what the holocrons were telling him. He fled, realizing that Obi-Wan was still alive. Maul appeared later in Season 3, contacting Ezra to convince him to merge his mind with his once more to get the answers to the questions they both sought. Ezra agreed to meet him in his old lair on Dathomir, and the pair undertook a Nightsister ritual to find clarity (he abandoned the darksaber after this, no longer caring about the Mandalorians). The ritual revealed to both of them that Obi-Wan was hiding on a planet with twin suns, and that he held the key to defeating the Sith (Luke Skywalker). He soon discovered that it was Tatooine and contacted Ezra once more, intending to use the young Jedi as bait to draw Kenobi out. Ezra arrived immediately, intending to stop Maul from killing Obi-Wan, but was lured into a sandstorm. He collapsed and was saved by Obi-Wan, who nursed him back to health at a campfire. This gave Maul the opportunity to confront his old nemesis. He demanded Kenobi duel him one final time, and the old Jedi accepted. The duel lasted only three strikes, with Obi-Wan impaling him through the chest. Maul died in Obi-Wan’s arms, realizing that the boy the Jedi was protecting was the Chosen One. He realized that both he and Obi-Wan were victims, cast aside and reduced to mere survival by their mutual enemy Darth Sidious. He proclaimed that the boy would “avenge us”, before the life faded from his body. Obi-Wan built his old adversary a funeral pyre. ## **What next?** Darth Maul will next appear in _Maul: Shadow Lord_ and is currently appearing in the show’s prequel comic _Shadow of Maul_ , set in the early days of the Empire. What happens after that is anyone’s guess, as Lucasfilm never goes too long without finding a way to bring Maul back.
