On MLK Day, we honor his fight against segregation, and continue his unfinished work for an economy and society that work for everyone.

While much of this focuses on free speech and solidarity, it's hard not to think about the slogan #BLM itself after reading #ChaosOrCommunity.
#MLK didn't like the slogan "Black Power". What would he have thought of "Black Lives Matter"?
Living with three generations under one roof: heartwarming family bonding or a real-life sitcom where privacy is a myth? Either way, sounds more functional than Trump’s cabinet meetings. #FamilyMatters #ChaosOrCommunity
A final victory is an accumulation of many short-term encounters. To lightly dismiss a success because it does not usher in a complete order of justice is to fail to comprehend the process of achieving full victory. It underestimates the value of confrontation and dissolves the confidence born of a partial victory by which new efforts are powered.
This passage reminds me of the online conversations around incremental change during the last couple of election cycles.
It's surprising how relevant #ChaosOrCommunity still is.
#MLK said the gains of the Civil Rights movement were cheap. "The limited reforms have been obtained at bargain rates."
That surprised me. Not him.
"Spectacular and turbulent events that dramatized the demand created an erroneous impression that a heavy burden was involved."

"The poor can stop being poor if the rich are willing to become even richer at a slower rate.”

"The absence of brutality...is not the presence of justice."
I expect many quotable quips in #ChaosOrCommunity. The context for that one is a mismatch of expectations of the civil rights movement.
White support waned after the Watts riots. But "the white backlash had always been there..."
Vincent Harding wrote a great introduction to #ChaosOrCommunity.
A key point is #MLK and the SCLC contrasted the lip service of the War on Poverty with the well funded and terrible Vietnam War.
His critiques of the latter were controversial and impacted funding. LBJ expected MLK to kiss the ring.
I'll use the #ChaosOrCommunity hashtag for comments about this book.
"Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?"
-- Martin Luther King Jr. (1967)
Remember, society is not a zero-sum game. In the long run, we either win together or the majority of us lose. Make good choices.
