Culture Wars as a War on the Young: Understanding the UK
Culture Wars Through the Lens of Young People’s Political
and Civic Resistance

Abstract
This article puts forward an analysis of contemporary ‘culture wars’ in the UK,
engaging with these ‘wars’ as fundamentally political and material power struggles
which are largely enacted on the bodies and lives of young people (among others).
Refusing to be drawn in by a widespread scholarly inclination to treat culture wars
as simply ideological disagreements, or as tactical froth and distraction, or as rheto-
ric to be endlessly debated, this article takes its cue from acts of resistance by chil-
dren who fnd themselves at the sharp end of the punitive discipline, disempower-
ment and erasure which is a fundamental outcome of the culture war’s performative
struggles. By engaging with three specifc case studies of youth-led resistance, we
identify and apply the analysis implicit in these acts. Tethering this to the theoretical
resources of cultural studies and a historical perspective on the disciplining func-
tions of educational institutions, we suggest that understanding the current culture
wars as an actual war—on young people and the futurity they represent and on ‘oth-
ers’—is a useful analytic for understanding their cultural and political signifcance
and for developing a political, cultural and analytical response. We conclude by rec-
ognising the coalitional politics that young people manifest, and sometimes literally
articulate, to resist the embodied control and erasure enacted on them. We set this
alongside a recognition of the ongoing trauma that the culture wars impose on them
and society at large.

The #hackneygazette has run
#Hackney @standuptoracismuk.bsky.social's statement on the dismissal of two #metpoliice officers for their part in the #ChildQ scandal.

Do the police really need a committee of MPs to tell them children should not be strip searched except in "truly exceptional" circumstances and for "serious crimes"? Can they really not work this out for themselves? What's wrong with them? #ChildQ

The Hackney Green Party welcomes the long overdue judgment on the
assault on Child Q in 2020, an incident that continues to cast a long shadow
over our borough and our nation.
The dismissal of two Metropolitan Police officers for gross misconduct,
along with a final warning issued to a third, makes a significant step in
recognising the serious failings that took place. However, this does not go
far enough.
We are deeply concerned that the misconduct panel did not uphold the
Director General’s findings of racism and adultification, two deeply troubling
elements of the case that have been plainly identified and called out by the
community and those directly affected.
Antoinette Fernandez, Green
Party Candidate for Hackney
North and Stoke Newington in
July 2024 said:
“This will hopefully go some way to
relieving the anguish and
debilitating trauma caused to Child
Q and her family, but unlikely to
improve the lack of trust the Black
community and people of Hackney
in general have in the Met Police.
I believe it is a step in the right
direction towards achieving justice
but both the teachers and police
involved should be prosecuted
further.”

Hackney Green Party continues to stand in solidarity with Child Q and her
family. We commend the bravery and strength of Child Q’s family who refused
to be silenced or dismissed, and whose persistence made this outcome
possible.
This outcome must not mark the end of the process for accountability. We
support the calls for further legal and professional scrutiny of both the
officers and the school staff involved. No child should ever experience what
Child Q endured.
We remain committed to advocating for direly needed systemic change and
anti-racist education locally and nationally.

Two Met officers dismissed for gross misconduct after strip-search of black schoolgirl Disciplinary hearing finds police officers’ search of Child Q, 15, was disproportionate and humiliating

I'm neither black nor female but I'm fucking fuming. Just imagine the indignity of being on your period at school, and being forced, in tears, to expose your private parts to officers.

#ChildQ.

Adultification of a black schoolgirl in a way they would have been unlikely to treat a white child? And the teachers just allowed this? Institutional racism in the school system and in the police is still alive. #bbcpm #ChildQ

2 0 1 0

Doesn't matter if one believes #ChildQ incident is racism or not. It's another example of Police incomptence. If Police had proper Child Safe Guarding Training, the incident wouldn't have happened. Also fact officers tried to cover the incident up. Shows a culture of dishonesty.

What? Strip searching a teenage schoolgirl with no family member present, including removing her knickers and getting her to peel back her sanitary towel to prove she wasn't hiding drugs in her schoolgirl vagina is inappropriate? Who'd have known! #ChildQ #BBCpm
