Photo of a postcard of the Elden Ring Symphonic Adventure Sydney Symphony Orchestra concert. The photo has the Sydney Opera House in the background.
After hundreds of hours playing #EldenRing, hearing the score live at the Opera House was a thrill. The #Sydney Symphony #Orchestra, Sydney Philharmonia #Choirs, and conductor Benjamin Northley were in fine form.
The first moment the choir sang was magical.

Angels in the Realms of a Little Less Glory An angel called on Shona, and she screamed in terror. “Apologies—”it boomed… There was a sound of horrifying squelching. A body with a hundred eyes, orbic shape, and eleven wings rearranged itself into a pure Pre-Raphaelite priestess. A shining face smiled down at her. The angel’s hair was thigh-length red locks platted into long ropes. She wore a Victorian interpretation of a medieval gown, and from her back there protruded two perfect gold-flecked wings. “I do forget the millennia,” the angel said. “It was all woad, wool, and neck torques last time I was here,” she looked nervously at Shona’s bright blue front door and then turned her head to take in the soft yellow pebbledash exterior of her cottage, and then across to the British Racing Green Mini Clubman sat on the drive. “You don’t still sacrifice strangers to the bog deities? No. Well, that’s a relief. Used to be one stray word: then splash; turf; and hello nibbly critters for four hundred years. Not an experience to repeat… Anyway, how rude of me— please, let me introduce myself… The Archangel Haniel, seventh level, etc., and suchlike at your service.” “But you’re a girl… sorry… woman,” Shona said. “I was a trans-dimensional multi-eyed orb a minute ago. I don’t know if that helps…” It clearly didn’t. Shona was trying her best not to stare, but in her 45 years on this planet, she was pretty sure this was the first time she had ever, ever, spoken to an angel. She was fighting the urge to goggle visibly. “Is the appearance a problem? I could come back as the orb, but that’s more of a travelling look.” “No, not at all,” Shona said. “Just that when I think of angels— it’s sort of boy angels. If you know what I mean. Glad that it’s more equal opportunities.” Haniel shrugged. “Hark at me, I’m forgetting my manners. Please do come in. Would you like tea? I’ve
only got Three Ships Label, I’m afraid. It’s one of those Lidl off-brands, but I’m not even sure what it is taking off.” “No tea, thank you. I’m here as a herald.” “Oh, we used to get the Herald. It’s all online now though, and at least you don’t have to deal with all of the extra paper recycling. There’s a library app; you can download it for free. Amazing really, but I do feel for the paperboys; it’s hard to compete with the instant electronic version. Now I think about it, our last paperboy was in fact a girl. Takes all sorts, I suppose. So then, Miss Angel, why are you visiting, if not for tea or a stand out of the rain?” “It’s about the choir.” Haniel said, relieved, mostly at the chance to get a word in. The woman was a verbal sluice gate. “Oh! So that’s why you’re here. Well, we take anyone, though I dare say we’ve never had an angel before. We’re a true community choir, so there are no auditions, but it would be nice if you could get most of the notes. I suppose with a performance like that,” she waved her hand vaguely trying to reenact Haniel’s transformation, “I’m assuming you’re a soprano? Drama lover and wotnot.” “More of a lower alto, actually. Though people do say I’ve got a good range.” Haniel started to answer, and then held up a hand and paused for a moment. It was not going well. Humans were always… well… the final act of creation and all, but there was a reason why she was usually assigned to all-heavenly spaces. Humans are, well, tricky. She regathered and started again. “I’m not here hoping to join your choir. More, we would like your choir to join ours.” “Oh, like Four-Choirs Night? Yes, we do like those. Always popular with the members. There’s an a cappella group over in Abernethy - Merry Gentlemen - we do exchanges with them. Lovely harmonics, but they’re always short on sopranos. Short on true basses really, but then who isn’t, frankly? Well, when’s the gig? We’re booked solid till January, I’m afraid. Always a busy season for us, December.…
this year. Ditto for reindeer and a Santa sleigh. Everyone’s got to have them…” Haniel was struggling by this point. It seemed that Shona would continue her monologue until the rapture unless interrupted, but interrupting was not normally how heavenly communications were undertaken. Upstairs angels waited patiently for one another to talk and finish. Words were spent judiciously, like a month’s last penny. Did the other angels have this bother with humans? No. Michael just rode up, barked out some orders, and off they went. Soldiering seemed easier. Gabriel never mentioned any difficulties, just dropped a quiet word in the right ear, and swoosh, everyone overlooked an unwed mother at the heart of everything. Some politician, him. To her relief, Shona seemed to have stopped, or at least paused for breath. “That’s the thing,” Haniel said, “the gig,” (her nose wrinkled at the word), is the big one. It’s 25th December - well, 24th at midnight really, or just after, technically.” “Oh, I think you’ve got the wrong choir,” Shona said, slightly deflated. “We’re more of a community choir than a church choir— pop songs and mental health, that kind of thing. We do a good gospel sway, mind, excepting Trudy since her hip op, and Stevie since the incident. Anyway, what I’m saying is I’m sure it’d be a lovely gig, but they’re mostly pensioners, see, and most are going to be at home with family. And in bed at that time. That’s well past the last bus home, so it’d be difficult for the Dundee girls. I suppose they could car-share with Kenny if he could be persuaded, but he’d probably want a nip too, so wouldn’t want to be driving.” “This is a holy request, more of a command really.” Haniel tried vainly. “Are you putting on transport? I could ask, I suppose, there’s still a couple of weeks, but I’m really not sure many folks will say yes. We could pack it out with upper altos; they’ll come to the opening of a crisp bag, you know. But if it’s a Christmas do, well, it’s going to be ligh…
This was better territory for Haniel. “Ah yes, closer than your own heart, but also all the way to Royal David’s city, and up to the realms of glory. We would make you part of the heavenly host. It’s a great honour.” “Would you have us back by 1 a.m?” “It would take only a heartbeat, and you would touch the centuries.” Shona squinted at her, confused. “We add a choir each year. I like to think it keeps things fresh; apparently, there’s something about the eternal power of music too. It’s important to have every era in the thronging.” “I’m not sure we’d be able to throng. There are a lot who struggle to put their feet in lace-up shoes at their ages. There are some very tasteful Velcro ones for an elder lady though. You wouldn’t know to look at them… But why us? There must be millions of choirs in the world. The South Ross Community Choir, well, we’re friendly enough, but not what you’d call competitive - there’s no Aled Jones here.” “It’s about balance,” Haniel said. She omitted the theological difficulties. Angelic choirs were always striving for perfection. But the nature of choirs being such as it was, and the nature of angels being such as they were. Well, she’d always somewhat assumed that Lucifer’s fall was at least partly being relegated to the basses, and having to endure half-syllable harmonies for eternity. Ever since then, humans had had to be involved to dilute the rivalries. That, and in ways she was never sure of the power of choirs singing, well that was the Word, in a way. But to balance such power He - the Management - ensured that all human choirs would be cursed with eternal pettiness, quarrels over uniform, the availability of water, and a surfeit of enthusiastic but only nearly-right altos. Her thoughts refocused on the middle-aged human in front of her. “I’ve got cathedral choirs, plainsong, centuries of Gregorian chants,” (she shuddered), “and the castrati era. Oh and the trumpets. So many trumpets. Anyway we carry out extensive musicological …
