You do. You’re nigh obsessed with not surrendering.” He held up a hand to stop her from arguing, or walking away. Sometimes, that helped. “Secondly, surrender and ruin are not the same.” She crossed her arms. “I’ve heard you mention both in the same breath. Repeatedly.” His grin came and vanished as sudden as a strike of lightning. “Ah, yes. That just brings me back to my first point, on how you keep speaking about surrendering as if it were your ruin.” She grimaced. “Obviously it would be.” His chuckle did not deter her from continuing. “I’m holding on to what sense of self I have left, because if I did not, like you said, if I did something like… fuck it, ‘surrender’, that would surely mean my sense of self, or whatever, would be completely ruined. No? I can’t be wrong. They can’t be wrong. It’s just logical.” Was it not? The way he looked at her made her have a hard time keeping believing her own dogmas. He just had a way of crushing them, as thoroughly as a firestorm, while simultaneously as infuriatingly gentle as a dew drop on a clover leaf. He brushed off a speck of dust from his sleeve, then moved toward her. “And why is it you keep holding on to your so-called sense of self so hard?” he said, words soft, eyes like embers ready to burst into flame. She did not like that. Not at all. “Uh…,” she started. Why did she hold on, indeed? Why should she. Was it a choice she had made? Had it been chosen for her? What’s a sense of self anyway? Was it important? He was standing so close now that she could feel the heat radiating off his chest. It might be a better idea, she thought, to give him more space. He brought his face closer to hers, eliminating that notion. Unfortunately, she had this tendency to forget what they were talking about, once his otherworldly eyes got to…
