I have to go do a bunch of crap, so no time to tell you about weird games no one likes. Instead, here's some animations from the Hissatsu Pachinko Collection series on Super Nintendo.
Starting with the first game:

PlayStation intro for Panekit in 1999. Build a little custom vehicle and explore the land in a game that predates all those open world crafting things on Steam
A lovable lunatic in the @insertcredit.com forums did the deepest dive you'll ever see: forums.insertcredit.com/t/let-me-tel...

A card with a facsimile of Hitler in Dengeki SFC 1993, 14. He has an evil level of five skulls. That makes him number one
One thing about Japan: they're gonna put Hitler in their video games and magazines. Can't get enough of that guy. He shows up anywhere, all the time

Intro to Mami Inoue: Kono Hoshi ni Tatta Hitori no Kimi on PC Engine CD-ROM² in 1992, which centers on the idol, after her appearance in Mitsubachi Gakuen, which features a lot more idols
You know the deal, it's an adventure game where you meet a cute girl at school. That's like her deal

Galactic Protector, another Sega Master System game exclusive to Japan. Not just that, but it also requires a Mark III and a paddle controller, making it very tricky to play. The cute tower defense game is set in the Fantasy Zone. It even supports two players... with two paddles

Would a floundering magazine talk about a Naxat title on Nintendo Game Boy, called Collection Pocket? It offers as many as ten games on one cartridge, from slots to cards to horse racing. All the classics. Race from New York to LA. Such value!
It's generally not well liked.

Box art for Lightspeed on PC, showing a man in a big white space helmet, the stars and a spaceship reflected in their visor
Back cover for Lightspeed on PC, showing the game's features, along with some screenshots
Interstellar if it was good, Lightspeed for PC is an early 3D space sim from 1990, where you're tasked to find a suitable planet to colonize, using diplomacy along the way
It was brought back by Atari a while ago, but got 1(!) review on Steam since 💀

Green arcade flyer for Mad Donna, showing it's Pac-Man mazes and cartoons of the cowboy protagonist, as well as an enemy
Arcade flyer for Mad Donna, a Pac-Man clone as late as 1995 that does have some neat pixel art as a trade.
How do you make Pac-Man more interesting? You porn it up, of course! Also, Pac-Man shoots.
And yes, you can play without the naked women rewards, but what's the point?

The box art for Microshaft Winblows 98, which looks identical to the Windows icon but with a dollar sign in the middle
That'll teach that corporation!
Microshaft Winblows 98 sounds fake, but it's a real video game. The PC game was made by the Pyst devs and WayForward, in fact. Yes, that one!
It has a bunch of stuff, like insider footage, a comics style story, a quiz and even a Tamagotchi of Bill Gates

Opening cutscene to TwinBee RPG for PlayStation. That's right, this 1998 title is a role-playing game with the sentient mascot. And it has dating elements, so you sick shoot 'em up freaks can finally kiss a ship (that's not true. unfortunately, it also has human characters)
#chosting
Japanese TV commercial for Tengai Makyō: Daiyon no Mokushiroku on Sega Saturn. Part of a long-running series of role-playing games, this 1997 entry was the first time that its location changed from Japan to the United States. It was ported to PSP in 2006 with a bunch on changes

Gameplay snippet of Hoshi wo Sagashite, the forgotten, Japan-only Phantasy Star game on Sega Master System. Its adventure will have you travel to familiar planets in a more mundane setting.
Luckily, there's been a translation for some time 🤔 www.romhacking.net/translations...

Gameplay demo for Tuned Heart, a 1996 strategy role-playing game on PC-98. What if your biker gang was made up entirely of cute girls? That's all the pitch I need.
Nebulous Translations recently patched the game in English, which I mention for no reason: nebulous.group/index.php/pr...

Japanese TV commercial for Blue Breaker, one of the anime games to escape the doom of the PC-FX. This is the PlayStation version, but there's also a Sega Saturn one, both in 1997.
The traditional role-playing game has some romance elements with your party of girls that affect the story

Opening theme to Down the World: Mervil's Ambition on Super Nintendo 🔊
The role-playing game with automated combat, inspired by Tolkien, was the first time that a SNES game had full lyrics in its music, very rare on a small cartridge like that. Unfortunately, the vocalist isn't credited

Screenshot for The Jetsons: Invasion of the Planet Pirates on Super Nintendo. George is on a space scooter
Screenshot for Yōkai Buster: Ruka no Daibōken on Super Nintendo. Ruka is on a runaway motorcycle in a forest
Screenshot for The Jetsons: Invasion of the Planet Pirates on Super Nintendo. A boss robot hangs as a light source above George
Screenshot for Yōkai Buster: Ruka no Daibōken on Super Nintendo. The boss light source above Ruka is some kind of metal demon
The Jetsons: Invasion of the Planet Pirates on Super Nintendo looks a little weird in spots.
That's because it was released as Yōkai Buster: Ruka no Daibōken in Japan, pretty much a complete overhaul to fit the mascot of Marukatsu Super Famicom magazine. It has an extra water level...yay

In 1993, the Nintendo Gateway System was installed into a number of planes. The multimedia app allowed passengers to play Super Nintendo games like Panel de Pon or Super Metroid for $4 an hour.
The service stayed until as late as 2012, offering up to Game Boy Advance at that point.

Albert Odyssey box art on SNES, featuring an illustration of a hero in golden armor clutching two swords. A blue lion in the background
Albert Odyssey SNES title screen is just the logo
Albert Odyssey 2 box art on SNES, featuring two chibi models of heroes and a darker knight in the background
Albert Odyssey 2 title screen is now the logo overlooking a mode 7 forest area
A pretty dumb name for a series tbh, Albert Odyssey and its sequel are both Japan-only SNES games. They're tactical role-playing games that are pretty bland but do have a cute Mode 7 look. From the director of Vandal Hearts. 'member that?
A Sega Saturn sequel did release in North America

Part of a larger series of historical battles, licensed from a TV channel, this game was originally released in 2003 to a Metacritic rating of 74. Not the worst, but still a weird thing to bring back. Some of the other games made it to consoles
This has accrued 3 reviews since... Three

A page from Pretty Graphics vol 2 detailing Hyper Securities 2 on PlayStation, with the anime cast of cop girls and a shot of the car chases
From Japanese game magazine, Pretty Graphics vol.2 (1998), a preview for Hyper Securities 2 on PlayStation. You can still see the lewd PC-98 origins in its art style, but it's now a much more gamified training sim with car and helicopter chases.

Japanese TV commercial for Athena: Awakening from the Ordinary Life on PlayStation. A forgotten 1999 adventure spinoff with rhythm elements, featuring Athena. You know, the Psycho Soldier? It's the game that cemented her wearing a sailor outfit, which she also does in King of Fighters

Thing Japan strikes again with this 2003 remote control... beetle? Based on the popular Mushiking franchise that combines two Japan favorites: creature battles and bugs. You get to see a shot of the original arcade game, but there have been multiple iterations since, even some movies

Demo gameplay for Cu-on-Pa SFC in 1996. Yes, the SNES version is called SFC, don't get it twisted. It's a color block puzzle where you try to match the field with the top side of your cube. It's a little confusing, but Japan loves tumbling dice.
The demo is better at it than I am tbh

Intro to Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity on PSP, the Japan exclusive expansion to the game. It's mostly the same.
Along with more story, the game adds more crossovers from Evangelion, KFC and other junk. More importantly, you also get a new race, Dyuman, and infinite difficulty ∞

Several screenshots for Discord Times on PC, 2004. The army screen is cluttered with items and various medieval units
Several screenshots for Discord Times on PC, 2004. A spell book shows a multitude of spells
We are now all living in Discord Times, the 2004 PC strategy game from an unknown Belarusian indie scene. It's a pseudo-Heroes of Might and Magic, since those were really popular there. Gather an army, fight around the map etc.

The many clay maquette covers of Asocom magazine, a portmanteau of asobi, meaning play, with computer. Meaning...computer. Anyway, it ran from 1985 to 1988 and initially only featured adult games, before becoming a general mag. Publisher Tatsumi now owns hentai mag BugBug

Gameplay snippet for MiG-29: Soviet Fighter on NES. A 1992 conversion of what was originally a ZX Spectrum game. Maybe the constant blaring of demo scene music gave that away. Still, it's a neat mix of an Afterburner clone that can turn into a vertical shoot 'em up. Unlicensed, but good?

Magazine advertisement for space strategy game, Regional Power II, of PC-98. The ad is two large space ships with 3 screenshots. The explanation on the right shows the page getting turn from its spine - LOGiN December 4, 1992
I know that it probably hurt the archivist to scan this page with a complete tear in the page, but when it's a rare occasion like that, I actually think that it gives so much life and character to the material. Like finding a page with a coffee stain or a box art scan with scuff marks

From LOGiN August 7, 1992, magazine advertisement for Asuka on PC-98. Some rough sketches of very thin anime characters, as well as dog-like demons. The top of the page briefly explains how the game works
This is about the level of anime drawing I can aspire to. A title generically called Asuka only has a few cryptic details about the game. It appears on a projected release list in a magazine, before disappearing completely. With a name like that, Google was not helpful to find more

In actuality, it's a promo for Yoake no Mariko on PlayStation 2, a 2001 "voice acting" rhythm game that is played with a headset, in collaboration with the studio from Ren and Stimpy.
