We're circling back to Tommy's reaction to "If this factory goes under, the whole town goes under." He's CRUSHED at the idea of it. Because Chris Farley is so good and committed to/in this role, you can SEE that Tommy is thinking about every, single person he knows and how they would be impacted. It's making me cry just typing this out! ... of course, we're now breezing right past "and that's when the whores come in," which happens AROUND this emotional beat, and not in a Marvel way that conflicts with or undercuts the emotional resonance of the story, but in a way that imbues it with vivid character and humor that comes from those characters, just as the genuine, heartfelt stuff comes from them, too.

Like Christ, who textually had the Authority, but didn't act like a big cunt to everyone about being the boss's son, Tommy is not a careless, thoughtless strongman. He, to some extent, knows his limitations, and given those, knows it's still his responsibility, limited or not, to provide for these people, this whole town, basically. He doesn't say, "I know what to do!" He RAISES HIS HAND like HE'S IN CLASS and petitions to say whether maybe what he thinks is worth hearing. He's going to grow and learn, though I'd argue this is mostly Richard's story of growth and acceptance of love, but I think to an extent he enters the picture fully formed, with his values and character already on full display, and he's a GOOD DUDE!

... because what he proposes is this: "If I give you everything I've got: my house, the stock..."

"If I give you that stuff as collateral, then would you give us that loan?" being the loan to get the brake pad division up and running that Big Tom spoke to earlier and was working on when he died suddenly. Tommy's plan isn't, like, a genius tactical play or some kind of 4D business chess. He says, "hey, if I give you everything I've got, is that enough to do what my dad meant to do before he died?" and guys, it's so fucking sweet and wholesome. Again, he doesn't say, "listen, my dad's a fucking genius and so am I. I'll bet everything on this brake pad division. What do you say? Do you have the BALLS to loan us the money then??" which btw would probably have more-or-less the same effect (they're a bank; it's about the numbers), he says, "I'll give you everything. Is it enough?" I'm sobbing, omg.
