C. L. (Catherine Lucille) Moore (1911–1987) was a breakout star author with her first professional sale in Weird Tales, "Shambleau" and continued to innovate the genre with the tales of Jirel of Joiry, the dark swordswomen who stands along with Robert E Howard's Conan the Barbarian and Fritz Lieber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser as icons of sword-and-sorcery. Moore's tales of the roguish and self-serving Northwest Smith set the bar for cynical antiheroes who were quick with a blaster and quicker to find the selves in circumstances that tested their morality, becoming the template for many rebels of the space ways, most famously Han Solo.
Today we remember C. L. Moore, one of the pillars of modern science fiction, weird horror, and fantasy!
