Would love to meet junior scholars there this summer for exciting learning and discussions! reposts welcome #CogSciSky #PsychSciSky 🐧🐧
Interleaving, or switching up problem types during study, can be powerful but mentally taxing. Combining interleaving with collaborative learning may reduce cognitive load by sharing it among learners. (via @learningscientists.bsky.social) buff.ly/h9LVK4p #EduSky #AcademicSky #CogSciSky

I'll be very curious to look back in a decade at this scientific moment. and despite my grumps above i do think a lot of really interesting insights will one day come out of this chapter of cognitive science. #CogSciSky
fine-tuning some LLM atm and laughing at the possibility of their moral status, regular sundays.

#NSFGRFP, just signed, recommend to other u.s. academics (easy to do and can’t hurt, even if it doesn’t help?) #CogSciSky #PsychSciSky 🐦🐦
you know Searle's chinese room example of being able to translate messages in and out of chinese without knowing chinese? I have that but for troubleshooting error messages about floats. yup just manipulating without anyyyy real understanding over here. #CogSciSky
you think your algo really knows you and then it does something like think you mean Journal of Molecular Liquids when you type JML submission #CogSciSky #PsychSciSky
Another one for ling. 🐦🐦 & developmentalists #cogscisky - my daughter invented a semi-productive morpheme?
"Open" is a frequent demand that sounds like "open-uh" most of the time
She seems to have re-parsed it and turned it into a command, I get calls for "milk-enuh" & "book-enuh" all morning.

Is there a good working definition of 'understanding' (c.f. knowledge) that people regularly turn to? (Apologies, not a #CogSciSky person, unfamiliar with the various schools of thought. Looking for something succinct).
Evidence for episodic-like memory in infancy is everywhere, if you know how to look for it! It was such a pleasure to write this paper with @lillianbehm.bsky.social and Nick Turk-Browne, out now in @cp-trendscognsci.bsky.social. #psychscisky #cogscisky #philsky #cogdev
new paper by behm, turk-browne & @levelsof.bsky.social doi.org/10.1016/j.ti... looks super cool! tackling the idea that on 1 hand we say infants don't have good episodic memory (cf infantile amnesia) but on the other tons of our cogdev tasks require at least some episodic memory #CogSciSky
bit of good news: approved technical staff position! link below. please be in touch if this matches your skills & interests! drive.google.com/file/d/16J2J... (hr listing posted harvard-internal now; external soon, per guidelines), happy for ?s & plan on quick turnaround! #CogSciSky #PsychSciSky 🐦🐦
One student *did* write a cognition haiku at the end of their exam!
“Saccades, to and fro
Attend to the relevance
Select, remember.”
I love it! #CogSciSky #PsychSciSky
new paper out by @erinecampbell.bsky.social &co! #BragelsonLab. TL;DR: diff's between blind vs. sighted kiddos language skills (which are relatively minimal but detectable) are *not* due to big differences in their everyday speech input. Another case of large *within* group variability. #CogSciSky

Big #BragelsonLab hooray to Nicole Calderon for successfully defending her sr. thesis! Nicole looked at word form recognition bilingual infants. Such a delight to watch her ownership & mastery over this work grow! The work will keep going beyond this milestone, thnx to nicole's push! #CogSciSky
Really proud of @erinecampbell.bsky.social’s work on this one! Intriguing look at how sensory experience and language access interactively contribute to young kid’s early production of visual, auditory, and abstract words. #CogSciSky #BragelsonLab
UGs know how to make a prof feel old. 2 egs from class today:
a) "well that paper was from 2001 so they probably didn't have much exposure to the world from media back then"
b) me, plays a 10k Hz tone over the speakers "weird it's not working". students: "ouch! it's so loud"

Rereading some Dennett (1983) for course prep and came across this nugget i can't wait to use in my next Response to Reviews:
"For our purposes, we can gingerly pluck two points from this boiling cauldron, oversimplifying them and ignoring important issues tangential to our concerns."

File under 'things that are not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but still feel wrong and very fixable':
In the year of our lord 2024, there is no* reason not to include a figure of your results in an empirical paper.

Network plot of recognition accuracy in the different conditions of the visual object recognition task and visual working memory (VWM) precision for simple stimuli. The network plot shows the pattern in Pearson’s correlations between the six object memory conditions and VWM precision. The color of the connections indicates the strength and direction of the correlations, with strong positive correlations shown in red shades and weak positive correlations in blue shade; there were no negative correlations. Thicker arcs represent stronger correlations. The graph's structure, obtained through multidimensional clustering, simplifies the high-dimensional correlation data for easier interpretation. Configural house recognition shows the strongest positive correlation with VWM precision, indicated by the dark red arc.

#CogSciSky & #PsychSciSky peeps: any1 use CogLabs for class & want to tell me pros/cons? planning a new cog class; looks like a good way to show students relevant phenomona [@michaelanes.bsky.social i see you mentioned it but i'm sure there are others!] coglab.cengage.com/labs/labs.sh...
Oh, is it time to share Thoughts about preregistration and open science again? Lemme find my list.
1. You can preregister bad designs and it won't make them better
2. It's still good to do as a researcher if only because concretizing plans in advance helps avoid issues later

very robust new case study of attentional blindness phenomenon: instead of not seeing the gorilla in the crowd it’s specific to not seeing stains on your clothes only while you’re getting dressed and could do something about it, fully detectable at all other times. #PsychSciSky #CogSciSky
currently about halfway through “Nonsense on Stilts” by Massilo Pigliucci.
I like Pigliucci’s accessible style. It addresses the demarcation problem: what makes something science vs. non-science or pseudo-science. >
