The remnants of Comet MAPS have slowly reemerged. But the chance this is going to be a Comet Lovejoy type headless wonder are very small.

C/2026 A1 (MAPS) is passing through the sun's corona today, and we're hoping it survives to give us something cool to look for after sunset tomorrow through around Tuesday or Wednesday.

A couple of nice comets I got to shoot were Tsuchinsan-ATLAS in 2024 and NEOWISE in 2020. #CometMAPS

Comet MAPS C/2026 A1 is now at perihelion, its closest to the Sun in its orbit.

It is behind the discs that hide the Sun in the SOHO spacecraft's imaging instruments, so it's not visible there. Will it break up?

If Comet MAPS C/2026 A1 survives its passage very close to the Sun, it may become visible to the naked eye or through binoculars low down in the twilight sky after sunset over the coming few days.

But the extreme heat and tidal effects of the Sun will probably destroy the comet.
