🌏 Common myna (Acridotheres tristis) The common myna, or Indian myna (sometimes spelled mynah), is a medium-sized, stocky bird, typically dark brown with a glossy black head, yellow bill, eye-patch, and legs. It has prominent white wing patches visible in flight. Native to Asia, its distribution has expanded globally due to introductions, making it a highly invasive species in many regions including Australia, South Africa, and parts of Europe and North America. They are ground-foraging omnivores, often seen in pairs or small flocks in urban and agricultural areas. A bird with reddish-brown body, black hood, orange eye patch, white wing bars and yellow-orange legs/feet. It is holding a recently caught swallowtail butterfly in its yellow beak.
Here is a #CommonMyna with a freshly-caught butterfly lunch. A #bird found in many parts of the world, it was introduced to Hawai'i in the 1800s to control insect pests. Now it's a serious pest itself on agriculture crops and it also preys on the eggs of native Hawai'ian birds--that's not good.
