Launching on a re-read of the #Confluence series by Jennifer Foehner Wells and I *cannot* get Ben Browder out of my head for the Alan Bergen character.
Something that I hope will be much clearer in #OneHeartTogether than it was in #Confluence is that "doll" does not mean "servant." River is in a carefully negotiated service dynamic in the context of her marriage, and not as a fact of her being a doll.

In #Confluence we often saw Kasu remembering the Japanese maxim "the rice-stalk that bears the most, bows the lowest."

I'm about halfway in this manuscript, the prequel to my 2022 novel #Confluence, and it occurs to me: Kasu's challenge is learning that she can be loved for herself and not treated like an extension of her (powerful) family. River's is learning that she is worthy of unconditional love at all.

In #Confluence, we saw River and Kasu sharing Western Armenian, Standard Japanese, Sendai Japanese, and English in common; one of the plot threads of One Heart Together is how they each learn each other's languages.
That said, River also speaks Kurmancî (Kurdish) as a heritage language.
