Turns out, he, Spencer, won a game, and when asked about his "costume," he said, "Nope, this is just me."

He made it into the final costume contest anyway and received a fair amount of votes.

I said, "There are lots of avenues and specialties you can try in librarianship - think about it."

We eventually parted ways and resumed our shopping.

Just doing my best to swell the ranks of incoming professionals.

I love bookstores.
And books.
And readers.

I was reminded of this post on Saturday when a complete stranger approached me in a restaurant and complimented me on my tattoos. He was so lovely and the lady with him had a radiant smile.

If they had been there sooner - we probably would have bought their dinner.

She: Yeah, you'll come back with their name, reason they are by the building, ss#, kids' names, and shoe size.

Me: (taking notes) (looking up) Will we need anything else?

We looked at each other in surprise and delight.

I slid him my business card and said, "We should be friends."

Reader - we are now, indeed, friends.

Kiddo in youth section: My mommy and daddy don't live together anymore.

Me: Yeah? You know what, Buddy? Mine don't, either.

K: They used to when I was little. But not now.

M: Huh. Me, too.

K: That's ok, though, right?

M: Yeah. It's ok, Bud.

K: Yeah. It's ok.

*That* is personal, Mr. Smith, everything we do is for you and I know who you are. How's that for personal?"

We ended the phone call on a positive note. He thanked me for taking time to speak with him and told me to have a great day. I honestly wished him the same.

The light changed, and we both moved forward, shouting parting words of encouragement. "Keep it up, man!" "Be safe out there!" "Take care!" "Nice talking to you!" and drove on our separate ways.

There is hope.

I listened patiently and made the requisit "hmm" noises to validate her.

When she finished up, I said, "Well, thanks for coming to see me - is there anything else I can help you with?"

She burst out laughing.
I like her.

Black with evenly spaced rows of white polkadots.

Me, to another customer at the thrift store: How many black and white polkadot dresses is too many?

She: Well, I'm a Disney fan, and I think Minnie Mouse, so I say never too many.

She may not have been as convincing as she expected.

Did not buy.
