Corita Kent verlangt eine plakative Interpretation, inhaltlich natürlich Frieden und Liebe.

SISTER CORITA KENT. Entitled, "Black but Beautiful." At her death, she left all the copyrights and unsold art to the Immaculate Heart community formed by the former sisters of the order. If you'd like to know more, visit www.coritaartcenter.org. I

SISTER CORITA KENT. May the sun shine brightly upon you. Another sweet watercolor. She battled cancer for twelve years and left us in 1986 at the age of 67. Far too young to go.

In 1974, Corita was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Her work began to take a more serene message and she changed to watercolor. I am sure, being a cancer survivor myself, her intent to was to leave behind the lifelong message of love and hope. #coritakent #cancer #watercolor

SISTER CORITA KENT. This is one of my favorites of the week. I love that the focus is on women, probably Mother Mary in the middle.

Corita often used quotes from people she admired in her work. She used ground-breaking techniques in the art of screen-printing as she developed her personal portfolio.

I love her choices in color, and the messages are always centered on love. It's a shame that Cardinal McIntyre did not appreciate the scope of people her art was reaching. #sistercoritakent #coritakent #popart #love #neighbor #color

Eventually, Sister Corita returned to secular life in 1968 after Cardinal McIntyre said in interviews that her art was "communist" and "blasphemous." She moved to the East Coast and began to work independently.

SISTER CORITA KENT created this in 1964. However, the real humor is in the inscription, "Mother Mary is the juiciest tomato of them all." Her art gained popularity during the 60s and 70s as she addressed the Vietnam War and humanitarian crisis.

VIDEO BONUS** This week we will be looking at the art of Sister Corita Kent. This is a very short (2 minutes or less) video from a 1982 interview on WGBH. I think this gives you a good picture of the woman. #sistercoritakent #coritakent #popart

Print with green, red-orange, and orange ink. “HANDLE WITH CARE” in a bold stencil type style is in the center of a circle, with “SEE THE MAN WHO CAN SAVE YOU THE MOST” in a distorted sans serif overprinted on top.

At the left, in handwriting is “No time or else a life walking in the dark i met Christ Jesus my heart flopped over and lay still while he passed as close as I'm to you yes closer made of nothing except loneliness. e.e.c.”

Corita Kent, handle with care, 1967
& Chevrolet newspaper ad, 1966

This piece borrowed an advertising catchphrase and gave it a new meaning by enlarging and distorting the headline for a screen print.

Art Department Rules
Immaculate Heart College
David Meckelburg
Corita Kent’s rules and hints for students and teachers

Rule 1: Find a place you trust, and then try trusting it for awhile.

Rule 2: General duties of a student — pull everything out of your teacher; pull everything out of your fellow students.

Rule 3: General duties of a teacher — pull everything out of your students.

Rule 4: Consider everything an experiment.

Rule 5: Be self-disciplined — this means finding someone wise or smart and choosing to follow them. To be disciplined is to follow in a good way. To be self-disciplined is to follow in a better way.

Rule 6: Nothing is a mistake. There’s no win and no fail, there’s only make.

Rule 7: The only rule is work. If you work it will lead to something. It’s the people who do all of the work all of the time who eventually catch on to things.

Rule 8: Don’t try to create and analyze at the same time. They’re different processes.

Rule 9: Be happy whenever you can manage it. Enjoy yourself. It’s lighter than you think.

Rule 10: “We’re breaking all the rules. Even our own rules. And how do we do that? By leaving plenty of room for X quantities.” (John Cage)

Hints: Always be around. Come or go to everything. Always go to classes. Read anything you can get your hands on. Look at movies carefully, often. Save everything — it might come in handy later.

Tomorrow the Corita Art Center opens in downtown LA

Hope to make it there soon.

Was reminded, once again, of the #ArtDepartmentRules which are so very very good.
