Happy 83rd birthday to Dennis Amiss born on 7th April 1943. He scored the first ever ODI century on 24th August 1972 totalling 103 off 134 balls as England beat Australia at Old Trafford by 6 wickets. #cricketcounts

On 5th April 1991, Steve Waugh & Mark Waugh became the first ever twins to play Test cricket together when they played for Australia v West Indies in Trinidad, 35 years ago today. #cricketcounts

On 5th April 1974, Tony Greig purveying off-spinners bowled England to victory v West Indies in Trinidad to level the series 1-1. Greig took 5-70 (8-86 in the first dig) as England won by 26 runs. It was a last Test match for Rohan Kanhai & Garry Sobers. #cricketcounts

Congrats to Martin Anderson of Derbyshire for his brilliant 228 off 271 balls v Worcs. He put on 273 with Luis Reece for the 5th wicket, the record for the county 5th wicket being 305 between John Morris & Dominic Cork in 1993 v Gloucs. Andersson’s previous best score was 107. #cricketcounts

Born on 4th April have been several Test cricketers including Jonathan Agnew, Steven Finn, Easton McMorris, Paul
Downton & Bapu Nadkarni. Sadly Nadkarni & McMorris passed away in 2020 & 2022 respectively but happy birthday to Messrs Finn, Downton & Agnew. #cricketcounts

Amelia Kerr’s 179* helped New Zealand women’s team chase down South Africa’s 346/6 which is the highest successful run-chase in a women’s ODI. Kerr’s 179 took a mere 139 balls with a strike rate of 128.78. New Zealand won with 2 balls to spare. #cricketcounts

It was 72 years ago today, 30th March 1954, that 17 years old, Garry Sobers made his debut for the West Indies in Jamaica against England. He batted at No9 and bowled left arm wrist spinners. He scored 14 & 26 & took 4-75. His first ever victim was Trevor Bailey. #cricketcounts

On 29th March 1994 England needed 194 to win the Trinidad Test v West Indies. In the 15 overs remaining on Day4 they managed to get to 40/8. Curtly Ambrose dismissed Atherton, Smith, Stewart, Hick, Russell & Thorpe. It was one of the great spells of fast bowling. #cricketcounts

On 29th March 1994 Allan Border started his last ever innings for Australia. He played 156 Tests scoring 11,174 runs at 50.56 as well as 273 ODI’s notching 6,524 runs at 30.62. In all 1st class matches he scored 27,131 runs at 51.38. He was an Australian great. #cricketcounts

Amelia Kerr of New Zealand has become the first cricketer to score 30 or more in 10 consecutive T20I innings. She scored 554 runs in those innings at a strike rate of 142. Just in case that wasn’t enough she also took 12 wickets going at a mere 6.74 per over. #cricketcounts

On 22nd March 1992, South Africa needed 22 runs off 13 balls v England in the World Cup Semi. Then there was a 10 min rain delay & the computer decided that South Africa needed 21 off 1 ball. SA had bowled only 45 themselves slowing down play. Architects of their own downfall? #cricketcounts

Bollywood star & pop singer Haardy Sandhu was well qualified to play Madan Lal (see last post) in the film ‘83’ as he began life as a cricketer. He played 3 matches for Punjab in 2005 taking 12 wickets at 26.00 with a best of 6/134. He was a right arm paceman. #cricketcounts

Happy 75th Birthday to Indian seamer, Madan Lal. He played 39 Test matches & 67 ODI’s taking 71 Test & 73 ODI wickets. A useful bat he averaged 22.65 in Tests. He was a member of India’s World Cup winning team in 1983 & in the Bollywood film ‘83’ he was played by #haardysandhu #cricketcounts

On 18th March 1948, India’s great short-leg fielder Eknath Solkar was born. He took 53 catches in 27 Tests the best ratio for any non wicket-keeper playing over 20 Tests. Virtually all of them were at short-leg. He sadly died in 2005, at 57 years of age. #cricketcounts

Bob Woolmer died on 18th March 2007. He had been a successful coach for South Africa and Pakistan & he played 19 Test matches for England scoring 1,059 runs at 33.09. His batting average in ODI’s was a mere 5.25. In all 1st class cricket he took 420 wkts & scored 15,772 runs. #cricketcounts

It is 30 years ago today that Sri Lanka won the 1996 ODI World Cup beating Australia by 7 wickets in Lahore. They had schooled England & India on the way. Aravinda de Silva was Man of the Match with 107*, 3 wickets & 2 catches. It was if it was yesterday. #cricketcounts

The son of Emile McMaster, he of golden duck in his one & only 1st class match, a Test v South Africa no less, also played one 1st class match. Michael McAllister turned out for the Royal Navy in 1920. He scored 7* & 6 & took 0-18 & 1-55. He did better than Dad but not by much. #cricketcounts

165 years ago Emile McMaster was born. His only 1st class appearance was for England v South Africa at Cape Town in March 1889. Batting at No9 he was out 1st ball & did not bowl as Johnny Briggs took 15-28. Appropriately McMaster’s club career was with the Ne’er Do Wells. #cricketcounts

149 years ago the 1st ever Test match took place with Australia v England at the MCG. Australia won by 45 runs, the same margin they won the Centenary Test match in 1977. Charles Bannerman of Australia scored 165, 67.3% of his team’s total of 245, his only 1st class ton. #cricketcounts

122 years today saw the birth of Kiwi wicket-keeper, Ken James. He played 11 Tests & averaged a mere 4.72 with the bat hitting a top score of 14. But James managed a 1st class average of 22.19 & scored 2 tons for Northamptonshire in 1938, a year when he notched over 1,000 runs. #cricketcounts

It was 20 years today that Mick Lewis of Australia took 10-0-113-0 v SAfrica in an ODI where the home team chased down 434/4 winning by 1 wicket with 1 ball to spare. Lewis’ analysis remained the worst ODI figures for 17 years. 87 fours & 26 sixes were hit, a record to this day. #cricketcounts
