“The EverythingSphere Of South Harales” ends updates prematurely for very obvious reasons. Newer editions of the compendium are simply smaller black blocks of plain plastic (thanks to advances in storage tech) that come with the additional poignant note: This compendium covers the myriad details of a beautiful tropical utopia that once existed. Suddenly it was no more. Some days I wake up, wondering if it was all a dream. Things appear that prove otherwise. Old tourist postcards. Sand in long-unworn beachcombing shoes, of that warm off-white tone I once wandered across lazily every weekend, a coconut fermented into a warm yet sweet appeal to fall to drunken, tired happiness. The smiles and mischief of my team, trading the stern seriousness of their important works for the inane curiosity of the camera, the lines of the land, and all too often of each other’s bodies. A box of long-expired medications for Angelo’s asthma condition, long unfixed even by the science of our alien neighbours, yet slowly healing in the green-shimmered warm air of the place. I was collecting the box in North Harales along with ordered sundries, when South Harales simply... fell apart. Some days I wake up, wondering if it is all a dream. If it is, please wake me up again because I hate nightmares. Or put me to sleep again. I don’t know anymore. I feel so tired all the time now. (There is no attribution as to who wrote this note, but of the 48 people listed as actively working on the second edition of The EverythingSphere, only 5 people survived by being off planet on provision runs, holidays, or academic trips.)
