I thoroughly enjoyed a visit to the under-restoration #Crossness pumping station on the banks of the Thames yesterday. One of the beam engines was operating and the decorative Victorian ironwork looked glorious. No, I am not one of the gents managing the steam pump. An easy mistake to make.

Not the best image but there were people who insisted on getting in the way of the others. Crossness Pumping Station. It became a Grade I listed building in 1970 and will remain on the Heritage at Risk Register until the restoration is completed. #Crossness #London #bazalgette #Architecture
A great day visiting #crossness the wonderful victorian sewage pumping station. Beautifully restored and wonderfully looked after by the Trust and its volunteers Do go! The route master journey from the station and the miniature railway were fab too!!!!
In the 1850s, London had grown into a city of two million, but there was no sewage system in place. After the stench of the Thames became unbearable, they embarked on a massive infrastructure project. To get rid of the 💩 they constructed massive steam-powered pumping stations. #crossness #AbbeyWood
