BTQ Unveils First Bitcoin Upgrade Testnet Designed To Thwart Quantum Attacks BTQ Technologies has launched Bitcoin Quantum testnet v0.3.0, bringing Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 360 (BIP 360) from theory to a functional implementation. This upgrade aims to protect Bitcoin transactions from future quantum computing attacks by making them quantum-resistant. BIP 360, also known as Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR), provides a test environment for developers and researchers to examine how these transactions would operate within a live network. The proposal was formally accepted into Bitcoin’s BIP repository earlier in the year but remained a draft. BTQ's testnet is the first to offer a working P2MR implementation, allowing users to create, fund, sign, and spend these transactions through their entire lifecycle. The necessity of BIP 360 arises from the long-term cryptographic risk that future quantum computers could exploit Shor's algorithm to attack exposed public keys on-chain, a potential vulnerability introduced by Taproot's design. P2MR mitigates this by committing directly to a Merkle root of a script tree, bypassing the need for on-chain public keys while retaining Taproot's scripting flexibility. The testnet release includes full P2MR consensus rules, SegWit version 2 outputs with bc1z encoding, Merkle root commitment verification, and control block validation. It also enables Dilithium post-quantum signature opcodes for quantum-resistant signature verification within the script tree. BTQ has provided command-line wallet tooling and RPC support to facilitate complete P2MR transaction flows. BTQ's CEO, Olivier Roussy Newton, emphasized the practical significance of this launch for industry preparedness, urging a move beyond theoretical considerations. He stated that BIP 360 is now a landmark implementation, offering a live network for anyone wishing to test quantum-safe Bitcoin.
