This fragment was discovered by Lady Sophie de Marais of Jader in her late great-grandmother’s attic. It was originally part of a larger manuscript which had apparently been dissembled sometime in the late Storm Age and used as kitchen kindling — a barbarous practice which I would encourage any civilised Orlesian to forego, lest more of our heritage be lost to careless ignorance. The binding holes show clear signs of aggression, and the top edges appear to have been sliced off with a knife. There is further damage on the lower outside corner, which is charred to the point of illegibility. While not within the scope of this edition, this scholar begs the owners of such invaluable manuscripts and historical materials to show some care for the treasures of the past, and refrain from ripping, chopping, or setting them on fire.

Text in a frame: Once, he dreamt about surviving this. That faded long ago, during twelve messy years of marching and fighting and scrabbling for miracles, amid compromises and famines and the lingering echo of a sweet melody singing in his blood.
