Captain Kirk is the greatest starship captain ever portrayed in sci-fi (with apologies to Captains Picard and Sheridan), and nobody could have brought him to life like William Shatner did. Happy birthday, Captain!

On this date in 1964, the first filming model of the USS Enterprise, designed by Matt Jeffries, was delivered to Desilu Studios for their new sci-fi TV series, Star Trek. It would go on to become the most iconic starship in the history of science fiction.

Today is the anniversary of the birth of Stan “The Man” Lee, co-creator of much of the core Marvel Universe. He’s also the person most responsible for me becoming a writer. Thanks for everything, Stan.

Season four of Star Trek sure got wacky, didn’t it? This one was my favorite crossover episode. “Holy photon torpedoes, Batman!”

With cover art like this (1954), is it any wonder that #Conan wallowed in obscurity for decades after REH passed away in 1936? It wasn’t until the 1966 Ace books, with those stunning covers by Frank Frazetta, that Conan finally became the #swordandsorcery icon he is today.

Y’all, Ken Kelly did more Star Wars art! I totally want to see Disney tell the story of the Jedi Flad N’Ag and his Tusken allies.

I have no idea what the context is here, but this is now the Star Wars that I want! And how did I not know that the fabulous Ken Kelly did Star Wars art until now?

Today is comicbook legend John Buscema’s birthday. It’s also the anniversary of rock’n’roll legend Ace Frehley’s on-stage electrocution during a KISS concert (which inspired the hit song “Shock Me”.) So here’s some Buscema art featuring KISS!

Chutes & Ladders has been a popular children’s game since it was first published in 1943. Before that, it was published as Snakes & Ladders in England as early as 1890. But the game dates all the way back to 13th century India, where it was called Moksha Patam.
