Some shitty weather, constant redirection by police, but eventually I found a spot and got some “okay” shots of #Daimonji.
The rain gave the fire a nice glowy haze.

Daimonji, the mountain slopes vivid green in the summer.
It's unclear what the character '大' represents.
As Kūkai is often credited as creator, many have suggested it signifies the Shingon doctrine of 'Sokushin Jōbutsu' (即身成仏 lit. 'Becoming a Buddha in This Life').
Alternatively it might symbolize the 5 elements, or a human figure.

Enjoying Daimonji from the rooftop of my friend's apartment.
'Okuribi', a sweet yokan in shades of oranges and peach, inspired by the Gozan-no-Okuribi.

Daimonji's (大文字) horizontal stroke is 80m long, the left sweep 160m and the right sweep 120m.
The character '大' means large or great, though it is unclear what it symbolises.
A little before 8pm the first fire (of 75 in total) is lit at the Kanao (金尾), Daimonji's heart.

帰りに自由が丘に寄って、ひかり街開設と同時の1956年に創業した大文字の和菓子を買ってきました。
自由が丘の甘味としては1933年のMONTBLANC、1938年の亀屋萬年堂に続く老舗だそうです。
こちらで一番好きな”かのこ”を含め、左から
まりも・かのこ・あじさい・京かのこの4つ。
豆もあんもしっかり、少しだけ小ぶりなのも良いんですよね。

すあま・うぐいす餅・小倉かのこ
自由が丘に寄ったので、大文字のお菓子を買って帰りました。
こちらで一番好きなのが”かのこ”。久しぶりに食べたくなった”すあま”も期待通り美味しかったな。

逗子からの帰り、まだ早い時間だったので自由が丘で下車。
久しぶりに大文字に寄ってかのこを買って帰りました。
こちらのかのこは中が白あん、真ん中に小さな求肥が入ってます。
