Page from 1880 history of the Edinburgh stage. Relevant text reads: “in 1766 a pretentious and bombastic actor, named Stayley, contrived to make himself a great favourite both socially and professionally with a large portion of the playgoers: which admiration, at least in the latter point, did not reflect much credit upon the taste and critical acumen of his friends, to judge from an account which an eyewitness has given us of his performance of the last scene of ‘’Macbeth,’ wherein he is described as fighting round both front wings, being stabbed ten times through the body, falling twice upon the stage, and rising each time to renew the combat; then in his last agony staggering to the footlights and speaking a speech of 25 lines of his own composition, after which he rolled about in strong convulsions, and died at last amidst frantic applause”

Starting my @asecsoffice.bsky.social paper on theatrical riots today. I ❤️ George Stayley so much & would totally have been on the side of the rioters demanding his return. #c18th #deathscenes 🎭🗃️
