#definingthedoc It is using the name of documentaries and the false claims of truth that people and marketers are able to deceive not only viewers as individuals, but the entire public
#definingthedoc This is the sorts of documentaries that I am more familiar with in terms of the scientific arguments and "university professors" that are used to manipulate
#definingthedoc more defining elements for the elusive documentary
#definingthedoc this reminds me of the social media edits we see everyday, with the content creators manipulating their edits and videos to fit the narrative and "reality" they want their audience to believe. They make those choices themselves- what to include, what to cut
#definingthedoc This right here is where we understand it is not a single defined genre, but rather shaped by different elements from different genres... I think
If anyone wanna explain this to me? As I was reading, I tried to figure out how this relates to the reading and couldn’t find anything. #definingthedoc
“Another way…” honestly I think quote highlights majority of the teaching Ashley’s been teaching us in all the HWA. #definingthedoc
Again, documentaries employed strategies as fiction filmmakers. I understand why, but have some documentaries just been falsely portrayed? #definingthedoc
in that same pg “constructed by…” this part makes the documentaries feel less objective than I expected. It shows that the film just gets edited by so much factors and ruins the structure yday. #definingthedoc
#definingthedoc this definition is flexible, but also proves the point that documentaries (like its definition) are of manipulations of real life, the truth, and actuality.
#definingthedoc I never thought about documentaries to be like this. I have to admit, I've never really tried to explain what a documentary is (not that I think I can anymore, exactly and simply). This, however, is what I have always thought of documentaries as
for me “documentaries are about real life” I thought it was real life, but framed in an entertainment purpose ruining the whole aspect of real life. So this message had me a perplexed meaning for me . #definingthedoc
#definingthedoc "Each one claimed simultaneously that they told the truth." I stopped to think here: what if they believed they were telling the truth bc they had only seen one side of a story? It is easy to believe that you know the truth when you only know the surface level. Truth is nuanced.
#definingthedoc The section where the author contemplates on whether or not docudramas are documentaries is significant. I think that even a regular documentary "points to the fuzzy lines around the border of the genre." Imo, docudramas manipulate the truth similarly to documentaries.
#definingthedoc "Our shared understanding of what a documentary is... shifts over time, with business and marketing pressures." I think this statement highlights the challenges of trying to document the "truth". I findit interesting that the work propoganda is mentioned many times in this section.
#definingthedoc The book mentions Moore backing down from calling his movie a documentary after receiving criticism on its historical accuracy. I think this says a lot about how confining yourself to a genre might actually kill your art form. But, I also think that some
#definingthedoc "A documentary film tells a story about real life, with claims to truthfulness.". I think that sometimes even showing more truth in a documentary can be interpreted as trying to sway your audience. "Telling the truth" is subjective and what you include says a lot about ur agenda.
#definingthedoc I like this line because it feels more honest than simply calling cinema vérité truthful or untruthful. To me, asking what kind of truth it offers makes more sense, since film can capture something real about a moment without ever being completely objective.
#definingthedoc I think even when something looks raw or unfiltered, it is still being framed in a certain way, so truth in film is never completely simple.
#definingthedoc I never would've expected someone to complicate the definition of "documentary" in a thought-provoking way, yet here we are. I never questioned the realism of documentaries because I automatically assume that a typically non-fiction piece would reference or use real-life events-
I think manipulating certain colors and images makes everything feel less real. It draws your attention, but it doesn't let you notice on your own. It takes away from the "real" elements of the film. #definingthedoc
This section confused me. Some of the wording got weird. But it made me think about how all genres cross over in some way; nothing fits exactly in one genre. It is all connected. #definingthedoc
The added elements of documentaries can make you feel certain ways by affecting your mood and emotions. It makes me wonder, are the producers trying to make people feel how the people who lived it feel, or how they felt after hearing the story? #definingthedoc
This section really made me think. Whenever I think of documentaries, I always think they are all true. But when I think about it more, so many parts of documentaries are fake, and only part of the story is told because they have to fit within a time constraint. #definingthedoc
#definingthedoc I don’t appreciate how Flaherty portrayed native tribes in his film while preaching this sort of view. Like, IDK if I’m not fully grasping his intentions, but his actions don’t reflect his ideals in my eyes, because how are you going to talk about the "purity" of native cultures-
#definingthedoc I think the question of when a documentary can no longer be considered one is an interesting debate because existing “documentaries” already range from archived records to reenactments of events and mayhaps interviews, but regardless, each one ultimately discusses real life.-
#definingthedoc [Cultural nationalism is a powerful motive…] For filmmakers, having the support of a government entity has to be both a benefit and detriment because on one hand, you are endorsed and perhaps even financially backed by it. But on the other hand, the content would have to be-
#definingthedoc I personally like films that take this approach in perspective, because it makes me feel like I’m the character experiencing these emotions and events personally, so it makes it all the more immersive. I have a belief that people do not truly understand the circumstances of a-
#definingthedoc This sentence caught my interest because it shows how the cameras (camera angles), editing, etc... they all shape how the documentary at the end is viewed and we don't take that into perspective.
#definingthedoc manipulation might not be bad but to me it looks like it will always happen in documentaries. I don't think its anyone's fault honestly if you think about it.... No one can make a perfect documentary.
