Following the general election, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) announced plans to become the "digital centre of government". It was also confirmed that the Government Digital Service, Central Digital and Data Office and Incubator for Artificial Intelligence would move from the Cabinet Office into DSIT, to "unite efforts in the digital transformation of public services under one department".

Since the election DSIT has published three reviews to inform this work: a blueprint for digital government, an assessment of digital capability across government, and an AI Opportunities Action Plan. It has also confirmed that the digital centre will be known as the Government Digital Service.

The Science, Innovation and Technology Committee is launching an inquiry to suggest priorities for the new Government Digital Service, scrutinise DSIT's planned approach to implementation, and identify opportunities and challenges.

These reforms outline the changes the digital centre will need to drive over the coming years, in partnership with colleagues across the public sector. They are an important starting point, setting the direction of travel, but we have more work to do to convert this into a detailed and fully funded roadmap for delivery. That's why we will develop these ideas into a Government Digital & AI Roadmap alongside the second phase of the Spending Review, to be published in summer 2025. This will supersede the existing 2022-2025 roadmap for digital and data, Transforming for a Digital Future.

The Blueprint will transform how citizens' experience the state, empowering them to engage with digital public services when, how, and where they choose. It also sets out how we will use technology to drive radical, far-reaching reform across the public sector.

Delivery of the blueprint will be led by the new digital centre of government within my department. This new team has now been established, bringing together the work of the previous Government Digital Service, Centre Digital and Data Office and Incubator for AI from the Cabinet Office, as well as the Geospatial Commission and part of the Responsible Technology Adoption Unit from other parts of my department. This new integrated function will be referred to as the Government Digital Service.
