DIPTYCH OF THEODORUS PHILOXENUS SOTERICUS, 525 CE. BIBLIOTHÈQUE NATIONALE DE FRANCE

This personage was a major figure at the court of Justin I, father of Justinian. Both ivory panels of this consular diptych are decorated in the same way: three medallions placed one on top of the other and bound by a band that creates three interlinked knots. In the upper medallion the consul is depicted half-length; in his right hand he holds the mappa circensis and in his left a sceptre surmounted by the bust of Justinian. In the lower medallion is a bust of a richly-dressed, rather gloomy woman who personifies Constantinople. On the middle medallions are engraved the titles of the consul, which differ on the two plates. In the field, an inscription in Greek is engraved in relief. In the C13 it was converted into a cover for a sacred manuscript, at which point the two panels were united by their silver surrounds and kept in the treasury of the abbey of Compiègne, until it was seized in 1792 in the French Revolution and added to the national collections.
