DnD players scouting with their familiar are being smart, and you shouldn’t look for ways to discourage that.

Instead, lean into it! Have the familiar find stuff. Sometimes kill the familiar. Have the world respond in a plausible, internally consistent manner.

There is no official DnD Ranger subclass for a “support” character. That seems like a missed opportunity.
