The silence is such that the sound of the tea being poured could startle someone. Orion pays attention to the motions, setting spoons, moving the sugar closer to Nehanna so she can place it in her cup. He refuses to break the silence, because that would mean trying to hold a conversation with her, and he's currently restraining himself from not strangling her by playing mother instead. A comedy unto itself. After they both have their tea, the niceties of doctoring it to taste have been done, and first sips have been taken, the wait begins.

It isn't long.

"I read the most recent report that your adjutant sent in from Bronze Lake. It sounds as though your recent finds have become fewer and far between - more mundane, as it were. This is why the study of Allagan relics will always be more fascinating to me - Never a dull moment when technology is involved, I say. Ah, it was so much better when Galuf was alive, he had you on the right path. And he kept an eye on you. A firm hand, you've always needed that. That Krile girl won't even answer my letters. Honestly, I've heard she's a rather fresh and unpleasant woman, nothing like her Uncle. At least that Ojika at the annex is polite."

She actually takes a moment for a breath and a sip of tea before she continues. "Why couldn't you have followed in my line of study? For that matter, why be out in the field at all? There are students to teach, such eager minds, and all the reference material you could want, Orion. Indeed, with your field experience, you could just send others out to search for the info and relics for you, couldn't you. We've plenty of resources and personnel these days. And it's so much safer here at home, you must admit. Certainly, the war is over, but that whole mess with the Empire and your friends and the Isle of Val? What a mess... and you won't even say what happened to your hair. You really ought to dye it, you know. More than those little streaks you like. Go back to that nice teal like your grandmother's hair."

Another pause, another polite sip. Right after tea, he's going back to the harbor and finding a boat sailing back to Vylbrand.

2. Wounded
Meradwyn's hands made him hiss, even though he was trying to bite his tongue. She pokes him in the side, which he barely feels, considering.
"if you don't shut it, they'll come, and you'll have to bear it," her voice is an angry whisper, a desperate reminder to shut up. So he buries his face in his arms.
He can hear the sound of her dragging the cloth from the bucket, precious water going to waste. For his stupid decision to try and jump in front of Avery instead of letting them take him, because they would anyway.
They were strong and many and in control here. But he couldn't stand back, throwing himself on the guards in part because he was terrified he'd never see the engineer again.
Now Avery was gone and he had nothing but bloody, stinging stripes to show for it.
"You have to stop doing this," Mer murmured, doing her best to soothe and stop the sting. She had no ability to heal. Alyss, their Sage, was the first to go, and most everyone was too weak anymore, if they ever had any talent in that direction. That's the point, of course. So he'll wear his stripes. So they all will.
"Not bloody likely."

“Emergency shutoff sequence zero one eight! EMERGENCY SHUTOFF SEQUE—MMNPH!”

Purah cringed as a baby bottle full of milk shoved itself between her lips. Holding it in place was the mechanical arm of a guardian, one of many she’d salvaged to create her dream invention.

Four held her limps spread in the air while others moved around her. One fluffed the skirt of her buttercup yellow dress. Two more tugged tight the ears of the new bow in her hair. And one last one buried itself deep in her diaper for a “check” that had been going on for minutes now. Her eyes rolled back in her head as her privates twitched and tingled from the attention. Can’t… Stop it…!

Weakly, she began to suckle on the rubber nipple in her mouth. She knew from the last four it would only leave her lips once empty, even though her stomach was starting to ache from fullness.

It didn’t matter what she tried, the machine just refused to listen to her! It was almost like it had a mind of its own, because she certainly hadn’t programmed it to go this far.

Just as she was beginning to lose hope, the door to her room slowly creaked open. Purah’s heart lurched with fear.

“Purah?” Zelda stepped in. “I heard screaming. Are you…” She froze, eyes going wide at the sight before her. Purah’s cheeks flushed, and her knees tried to knock together in shame.

The lights on Purah’s automatic nursery blinked suddenly. All free arms swiveled to face the door, Zelda jumping in surprise.

“New baby detected,” the machine spoke.

“RRRRRRNNNN!” Purah cried.

“W-What…?” Zelda was too slow to react. The hands suddenly surged forward, and she screamed. It seemed Purah had a new playmate now, whether she wanted it or not.

Purah finds out the hard way that she's not a good programmer. (Have I ever mentioned I love robot nurseries, lol?)

Movie poster for The Secret Agent. Painted in warm amber and cream tones, three men's faces emerge from loose brushstrokes — expressive, slightly weathered, each gazing in a different direction. Below them, two small silhouetted figures walk together against a white background, suggesting a father and son on the run. A faded government stamp marks the lower right corner. The design evokes vintage 1970s political cinema.

Wagner Moura delivers the most charismatic lead performance of 2025 in a film that trusts its audience the way 70s Hollywood political thrillers did.

From miles away, Harper could smell Korgrad burning. Ash, smoke, and under it, flesh. Without telling Kalin in front of him, he sat the forest road and cried. Everyone he knew was dead or dying. He wanted to join them.
