The snow had turned to sleet, and the sleet to rain. Now lightning split the sky in jagged bursts. Miles from the fires at Blackmere, Blackthorn Asylum stood in the storm. Wind rattled the old windows, and inside, the inmates screamed like frightened children. Doctor Bowditch stirred in his office chair, blinking himself awake, a cold cup of tea sat on his desk beside a half-read file and an empty whisky glass. He rubbed his eyes and noticed the corridor lights were out, and he could hear bare feet slapping in the marbled hallway. He stood up, the door to his office was slightly ajar and he stepped into the corridor, lamp in hand. A shape sat hunched in the dark, a patient, rocking and slapping at their head. βRufio?β Bowditch whispered, getting closer. The man was covered with blood, not his own, behind them, more footsteps, these ones not bare, Bowditch turned. βWhoβs there?β he called. The sound of a rifle cocking and a shot rang out, missing. Stone and dust exploding from the wall beside him.
