A dark-haired woman in a black hat and fitted corset stands behind the bar, fully back in command of the room, while a red-haired woman with freckles sits at the bar facing her with a drink in hand. Farther back, another red-haired young woman with freckles moves between tables working the room. Warm lamplight, bottles, worn wood, and seated patrons make the bar feel active, lived-in, and real, while the standing woman’s presence subtly changes the balance of the space.
For Roxy, even after all that time, it came back easily.
The hat. The corset. The room. She was home.
Sera had held the room. Eve had found her place in it.

Chapter 7: Hold My Hand "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard the TerraFirma 7." Straati's voice echoed across the deck of the windwaker, grabbing the attention of all passengers currently aboard TerraFirma’s maiden journey beyond the Barrens. She stood by the bow, hands behind her back, smile on her face, the blue TerraFirma cap affixed nicely over her intricately braided blonde hair. The brilliant pinks of the skies and the calm sands of the Dawn stood behind her, separated by His serene white veil. “You may have heard many tales about Eonov and its great starchild,” Straati continued, “but none come close to what the Maker will show you today. For the next eight hours of our trip, my fellow crewmates and I will be your guides in these lands, helping you cross the desert the same way He helped our ancestors reach the Sunrise Strip.” She gave a slight wave with both of her ears. Mallik nodded back. She climbed up the masts to unfurl the sails. The blue drapes of the TerraFirma 7 opened up, folding open like a book. The first wind blew. It filled the sails. It filled her lungs. It filled the windwaker’s engines. They finally roared to life. The oohs and ahs of the passengers were palpable even from above the top sail. Straati kept smiling as the windwaker started moving. She simply raised her right hand, holding it at the same height as His white veil. “Dear adventurers,” she spoke with conviction as the sun rose behind her, piercing through His veil for the first time in all those endless nights these tourists had spent in the Sunrise Strip. “I welcome you to His Sun.”

Peppermint, a bard most eloquacious and skilled, dances about the center of a packed tavern twirling and playing her fiddle as she sings the Hunter and the Hair, a stealthily bawdy song, backed by her partners in rhyme Ulrecht and Himmel. As the song comes to its dramatic close with the hunter sticking his knife in the hare the crowd breaks out in applause. After an encore Peppermint leans against a pillar nursing and ale and chatting with a serving boy who loves the song but hates that it ends sadly with the hare dying.
Peppermint explains to the boy that death is a necessary part of life that mortals should not fear and then, in a conspiratorial whisper, lets him know that the song is not about a hunter chasing a small furry animal, that the knife he plunges into the hare is not a knife, adding a lewd hand gesture to hammer the point home. As the boy stares in shock she gives him a little advice: good men don't have to chase women to find love, and tells him to work hard because hard work makes good men.
As Himmel plays his drum and sings Peppermint and Ulrecht work the crowd, gathering information through amiable chat and friendly flirting before leaving for the night where Peppermint, worked up by both the performance and a sack full of silver coins, dances and prances and makes eloquent proclamations before Ulrecht and Himmel tell her to drop the silly minstrel act. Shows over and it's time to be serious.
A little more fiddling around with #covenantofdust introducing Peppermint the wandering minstrel. I LOVE writing her - I get to be as ridiculous and stupid with her dialogue as I want. Need to break out the thesaurus to turn it up to 11.
