For me, there's always conflict between how I imagined a piece would sound and the chunky stew I'm trying to revise. Is this correct? Does it flow? Is it complete shiite?

Characters come alive for me when they have distinct voices in their narration or dialogue, and relatable reactions to situations. Show me their wit, their idiosyncrasies, their vulnerabilities, their tells. Stories feel/fall flat when everyone talks and acts the same.
