I jump directly to reading the draft from varied critical lenses (gender, socioeconomic, cultural, etc).
Is it premature? No, I don't think so. If the book isn't saying anything legibly compelling from at least one critical perspective at draft one, that's a red flag.

I love when a twist surprises me (as long as it doesn’t seem to come out of nowhere), & also when I guess the twist (as long as it wasn’t too obvious). A good twist, whether I saw it coming or not, will sell me on a story forever

I put on my adverb hunting hat and head into the draft jungle. Adverbs are good for expediency when drafting but most will be replaced with showing instead of telling.
