Cet ouvrage somme de 504 pages regroupe en un seul volume tout ce que Druillet a produit autour de cet univers : Le roman de Bram Stoker Dracula, traduit par Alain Morvan, accompagné des 11 illustrations originales de l’édition Opta de 1968. Les séries de dessins et de peintures qu’il a consacrées à la figure du vampire de 1962 à 2018. Les notes et croquis de l’artiste, en grande partie inédits, à l’origine de son album Nosferatu paru en 1989. Ses explorations cinématographiques : ses affiches pour Jean Rollin, le Dracula de Jean Boullet et le film Nosferatu adapté de son album.

Born at a knot in history, a frightened little boy in the body of a golem, I left fascist Spain for liberated France before being raised by my grandmother in a concierge's lodge in Paris. At that time, I read Tintin, and I discovered American comics-Flash Gordon by Alex Raymond, Hal Foster, Brick Bradford, Connie, Jack Kirby: it was the sudden revelation of a new art form.
Later, I ventured elsewhere, into chaotic imaginary worlds: fascinated by opera, from Wagner to Verdi, by entropy, symbolism, expressionism, Art Nouveau and Jules Verne, future worlds and lost worlds - it's all the same to me - from the Carthage of Salammbô to the science fiction of Leigh Brackett, Catherine Moore, and Michael Moorcock.... and so l created Lone Sloane, modeled on a young Marlon Brando, exploding the page to express the dead stars that still shine, in a mental and graphic overload - a theatre of cruelty. And silent stories, too, drawn from early cinema, from Laurel and Hardy and Popeye, and from many inspirations passed down by my masters - from Lovecraft, to Dracula and Nosferatu. Giraud, who was not yet Mobius, brought me into Pilote, the weekly magazine run by René Goscinny, and I brought in Jean-Pierre Dionnet. In Kap Comix, we saw the absolute freedom of Crumb and the others, and we wanted to do our own thing in turn.

That is what became Metal Hurlant in 1975, which then became Heavy Metal in the U.S. in 1977, with Will Eisner advising Dionnet. And now, in recent weeks, Metal Hurlant is being published under its French name on American soil.I remember that in 1971, I traveled to New York, discovering that land of all promises. I met Lee Falk, the creator of Mandrake, and the new guard: Steranko and Neal Adams, who, too, were heralding a new era.
Across the Atlantic, at Metal Hurlant, Corben joined us, then a hundred others from around the world, all preaching for comics for us, for adults - something that was still forbidden to exist.I will continue, as long as I can: with my comics and painting, bronzes, sculptures of giant frozen warriors, my tiny, cursed objects, architecture, opera sets, translucent vases in pâte de verre.I will go forth, watching the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse advance, in a battle already lost-but so what? What matters is the gesture, and the laughter, too, which saves us. As for me, I will go and sit at the Round Table.
