Dumbbell Nebula
First attempt at capturing the #DumbbellNebula from my apartment patio in #VictoriaBC. I'd love to have spent more time on it, but this stupid "staying employed" thing keeps getting in the way of my late night activities.
Here’s the full frame on Flickr — free to explore, share and use. Hope to see you soon!

The #DumbbellNebula, named after that gym gear you lift once and again in a gym, is the second planetary we got this summer. Its twin lobes stretch north-south, surrounded by a faint outer halo. At its center lies the largest known white dwarf, whose violent past gave birth to this stunning remnant.
Too much ice cream this summer? Let's get fit with the #DumbbellNebula! No clouds (and no wildfire smoke), so it's time to lift the telescope again and work on #Messier27 and its whereabouts. 🧵[THREAD]
M27 - Dumbbell Nebula - telescope processed image. M27 is a planetary nebula in the constellation Vulpecula. It's a stellar corpse, a dying star that shed its outer layers, glowing brightly.
M27 - Dumbbell Nebula - unprocessed image. The Dumbbell Nebula was the first planetary nebula ever discovered. Charles Messier found it in 1764, describing it as an "oval nebula without a star."

False-color image of the central region of the Dumbbell Nebula (M27, NGC 6853) in the constellation Vulpecula. Green represents glowing hydrogen gas; red shows dense molecular gas and dust. This planetary nebula was created by an aging star (visible near the center). Requires powerful telescopes to observe in this detail.

Stunning image of the Dumbbell Nebula (M27), a planetary nebula showcasing the potential future of our Sun. The vibrant colors represent sulfur (red), hydrogen (green), and oxygen (blue) emissions. Located in the constellation Vulpecula, this nebula is a glimpse into the stellar lifecycle and a reminder of the Sun's eventual fate.

A stunning image of the Dumbbell Nebula (Messier 27), a planetary nebula in the constellation Vulpecula. This vibrant synthetic color image, captured by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT), reveals the nebula's intricate structure, showcasing the glowing gases expelled from a dying star. The nebula's colors represent different elements and temperatures within the expanding gas cloud. The Dumbbell Nebula is approximately 1200 light-years from Earth.

🔭 The Dumbbell Nebula! 🌌
Captured by Luca Bartek using the #Celestron #C14 #EdgeHD, the #DumbbellNebula (M27) is a stunning example of a #planetarynebula.
On a black background dotted with white, gold, and red stars, the Dumbbell Nebula is centered and roughly a spherical pink translucent ball with blue transluscent wing-like structures on the left and right sides, with the left side blue structure slightly higher than centered on the pink ball, and the right side structure slightly lower than centered on the pink ball. The combination of the pink and blue translucent structures gives an appearance similar to a hard candy disc wrapped in cellophane with the twisted "ears" of the cellophane being the blue structures. In the upper right corner, a white star is bright enough to have four diffraction spikes - or star points - jutting from the top, bottom, left, and right of the star.
Picture of the day. Messier 27 in the constellation Vulpecula, better known as the Dumbbell Nebula, was discovered by Charles Messier in 1764.

Snapped a shot of the Dumbbell Nebula, glowing beautifully from 1,360 light-years away! It's vibrant red and green hues mark the remnants of a star that began shedding its outer layers about 10,000 years ago. #Astrophotography #DumbbellNebula #CosmicWonder
Last night's image of #M27, aka the #DumbbellNebula, captured by my Unistellar #eVscope. It is the first planetary nebula ever discovered and about 1250 lightyears distant. In the center of the gas envelope a #whitedwarf progenitor is all that's left of the once Sun-like star.
