Day 27: Disappointment of the year @simonxsludge ‘s #decvinylworship #dvw2020 Ayreon - Transitus Todays challenge pains me a bit. I’ve been a huge Ayreon fan since 1995 and usually I’m extremely excited about new Ayreon releases. This time however, an Ayreon release did disappoint me. After the fireworks of The Source or The Theory of Everything this album sounds quite underwhelming. A bland story, quite cringy lyrics, a tad uninspiring, resulting that it all just sounds similar to previous works. I had to print the lyric booklet myself as something went wrong with the final product. I tried hard to like it. I played it about 26 times from start to finish. Perhaps I missed something. Notre Dame’s Nightmare Before Christmas, by @snowyshaw1. Fantastic record. Christmas songs wrapped in a horrific/vampiric theme. It’s fabulous, fun, eerie and highly atmospheric. Notre Dame also released a VHS called Thrillogy. I still have that tape in my collection. To my knowledge that’s the only physical medium that has Scarecrows on it. One of their coolest songs actually. Wish there was a 7” of that one or something. Day 19: Band from your area @simonxsludge ‘s #decvinylworship #dvw2020 Martyrium - Rebellion Preferring your black metal to be ugly, primitive, old school, kvlt & trve, horrible, vile, messy, noisy, disturbing, unlistenable, unlikeable and of questionable quality? Don’t look further, because this is it. This is a self released pressing of the 2004 demo Rebellion by Martyrium, another band of mine and @jimiziermans. Both of us live in the same town, so I guess that would make it a band from my own area. Only 2 copies of this record exist. One for @jimiziermans, the guitarist, and one for me, the vocalist. The record was simply recorded in one session in a rehearsal studio, to guarantee the most distasteful sound possible to bring tears of despair to parents, animals, demons and wizards. Also satan. As an early teenager I listened mainly to hardrock like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Vengeance, Van Halen. In 1995 one schoolmate traded me a mix tape with music I might like. “It’s a lot heavier than the stuff you listen to now!” The first track on the tape was Abigor’s Weeping Midwintertears. The very first black metal song I heard. I was in awe. Shocked but in awe. Was this Satan screaming at me to join the horde? Totally! I’ve been a loyal servant ever since. Of course I wanted to collect all records that were on that mix tape.
