“To me, migration means movement. There was conflict and struggle. But out of the struggle came a kind of power and even beauty.”

EXPRESSIONISM - JACOB LAWRENCE. I immediately thought a family rebuilding. Many times in our relationships, we do have to rebuild and start again. It is never too late.

JACOB LAWRENCE. I am sure he was making a statement about colonialism, but all I can think is Alexander Hamilton.

JACOB LAWRENCE. This interests me from the simplicity of it opposed to other "busier" paintings, and how the size of the girl increases with the number she is writing. Certainly some symbolism elements creeping in.

JACOB LAWRENCE. "The Shoemaker" from 1945. You can see the elements of expressionism all over this piece.

EXPRESSIONISM - JACOB LAWRENCE. "The Lovers" from 1946. I think this may be him honoring his wife, Gwendolyn who he married in 1941. Sweet!

In 1939 and 1940 Lawrence created a series of 31 panels that describe moments in Tubman’s life. “We hear about Molly Pitcher. We hear about Betsy Ross,” he later told an interviewer. “The Negro woman has never been included in American history.” In Panel 4, four black children are playing. A girl in a red dress does a cartwheel while her friend in a white dress is facing upward in a sort of upside down crab walk. Behind them two boys, one in yellow shorts and one in blue shorts, are in mid-air jumps. All four are playing beneath a blue banner.
