Saw THREE first-of-the-year birds today, including my first warbler of the year, this lovely Palm Warbler. The other two were Hermit Thrush and Yellow-bellied Sapsucker π
Day 115 of #ebirdeveryday π¦
I haven't been posting about my #ebirdeveryday but I am still submitting my daily checklist.
Today we heard our first-of-the-year White-throated Sparrow ππΆ
Some exciting first of the years today: first waterbird (Great-blue Heron), first swallow (Tree Swallow), and first shorebird (Greater Yellowlegs)!
This is day 105 of #ebirdeveryday!
Day 100 of #ebirdeveryday! It's that fun time of year when we're still seeing winter birds but also the migrants and local breeders.
Today: American Tree Sparrow, Pied-billed Grebe, Wood Duck, Turkey Vulture, Common Redpoll, Purple Finch... to name a few π
And this is day 95 of my #ebirdeveryday challenge! Closing in on 100 consecutive days of contributing to #CommunityScience π
Yesterday vs. Today.
Day 94. A few robins and crows flying in the sideways-blowing snow. Some poofy-looking redpolls and song sparrows at the feeders.
#ebirdeveryday
Day 93.
Walking around wetlands is pretty great for mental health #ebirdeveryday
(Except this one where the dyke was overgrown with veg and I got stabbed in the eye by a branch and I was stumbling around and tripping on rocks and holes hiding in the grass and I saw no ducks π
Day 90. Today was probably my best #ebirdeveryday list yet!
I watched a Northern Shrike go after a Red-winged Blackbird, then hover above the wetland. My FOY shrike! π€©
Bad pic, but you can tell it's a shrike!
Also good variety of ducks! π¦π¦π¦
Day 86.
Fresh snow on the ground, fresh birds at the feeder.
Dark-eyed Juncos are a new yard bird for us! π€π
#ebirdeveryday
Day 84 (yesterday).
Went birding with the Ornithology students yesterday. It was really cool to have the opportunity to teach them the difference between Barrow's & Common Goldeneyes, also Hooded & Common Mergansers. Also, watching hundreds of gulls fly over us. #ebirdeveryday
Day 81. Same old birds, but now they're singing!
There's a whole new soundscape out there: trilling juncos and redpolls, complex melodies of the song sparrow, harsh-sounding calls from grackles and blackbirds, and the occasional hawk mimic from the blue jays πΆ
#ebirdeveryday
Day 80.
Bit of birding out at Cape Jourimain. Some open water with Long-tailed Ducks, Common Goldeneye, and Black Scoters. #ebirdeveryday
The bridge to PEI is looking pretty quiet these days.
Day 76 & 77 (can't keep up π€ͺ)
Yesterday: sunny walk in the neighbourhood. Lots of chickadees singing βοΈ
Today: 2 hours of birding with some of the Ornithology students. Few birds but no shortage of enthusiasm & positive vibes βοΈπ¦

Day 73. Some signs of spring this weekend! Red-winged Blackbirds, Common Grackles, and American Robins! π
#ebirdeveryday
Day 71. Ponds are still frozen & my eBird lists are still <10 species. But spring is in the air & as soon as the ice melts my field season begins ππ¦
#ebirdeveryday
Day 69. Saw a few birds on my #ebirdeveryday walk. The usual suspects: chickadees, redpolls, crows, Downy Woodpecker.
And I met a tree with a face.
Day 67. Today was a very good sort of day. I saw three new species for the year: Pine Siskin, White-throated Sparrow, and Northern Cardinal.
The Pine Siskins were on my lunchtime walk. They were at the top of a π² along with a Red-breasted Nuthatch.
#ebirdeveryday
Day 63. Our resident Downy Woodpecker showed up for my #ebirdeveryday checklistπ
Day 61. Braved the cold and it was worth it! Got a new species for our yard list: Brown Creeper. I will never not be excited about seeing Brown Creepers. Never.
Here's my cold, happy, omg-a-creeper face...
#ebirdeveryday
Day 60. More snow. And for the first time, I had an empty eBird list. Not a single bird in my 15 min outside. Even the feeders were quiet.
#ebirdeveryday #snowday
Day 59. Last day of February. Harry dog joined for the bird walk in the wind & sun. Some crows and a Bald Eagle for my #ebirdeveryday checklist π¦
Two months down π
Day 58. Visited my field sites today. No birds yet but it'll be buzzing with activity come spring! π¦ #ebirdeveryday
Day 56. New species for the year = Common Merganser π 20 of them! #ebirdeveryday
Went birding with some of the Ornithology students today. We only saw 6 species, but one of them said they were just happy to get outside & see any birds π yup, me too.
Day 53. Walked the trail near my house. A handful of chickadees + two ravens. Uneventful. Submitted my eBird list for #ebirdeveryday.
...THEN I noticed this Downy Woodpecker right outside my back door π
Day 52. We headed to the coast in search of sea ducks. We did not find sea ducks.
#ebirdeveryday
Day 51. Haven't been posting, but I have been birding! #ebirdeveryday Today: just a few ravens & redpollsπ¦
Also, we signed up for the Atlantic Nocturnal Owl Survey today w/ @BirdsCanada_Atl π¦
2021 is the year I commit to more #CommunityScience! π
Day 47. Pretty white out there. My binoculars have a nice layer of ice around the oculars βοΈβοΈβοΈ
#ebirdeveryday
Today it was hard to focus on birding. Got my fresh air & daily list but didn't go far.
Day 46. Met some neighbour birders who knew us by name from eBird π (aren't many ebirders in Miramichi). They told us there's a trailhead <5 min from our place. Explored this new spot today & yeeeeee it's gonna be so birdy this spring π & I'm gonna be so nerdy π€ #ebirdeveryday
Day 45. Participating in the #GreatBackyardBirdCount while exploring the backcountry of NB!
I'm at 1.5 months of #ebirdeveryday π
