a small holiday comic of edelgard and bernadettas short lived but ever lasting impactful relationship that edelgard has hung on for during most of her adult life. you'll notice she has brown hair here, there's no crests in this au so i needed to adapt a way of changing her hair via a traumatic event. bernadetta is that trauma for the winter theming, bernie is a little Santa, she is holding a hedge hog plushie that seems to be handmade. she gifts it to a young edelgard bernie: h-happy holidays...ed....i-i got you um....a creature. ed: a creature you say!? notice ed is playing on to bernies quirks. genuinely finding her awkwardness endearing and greatly enjoys her company
the hedgehog has purple buttons sewed on for eyes. it looks well loved ed: wow! this is a lovely creature! ed has always loved bernie, but never properly knows how to express that. today though, for the holidays, she's chipper. and shares a genuine exchange of gratefulness to her good *friend* bernie (queue situation ship here) ed: this is the greatest gift ive ever gotten. thank you bernadetta! bernie: oh..um. n-no problem ed
queue to a present day timeskip, in fact, let's make it.....about 10 years after the events of this hedgehog present. bernadetta set fire to herself and died, edelgard never got over this. however she meets a very Very mentally unwell linhardt and finds her sheepish and self loathing behavior.... familiar. lin: my my! what a cute creature! where did you find such a handsome thing? ed: do NOT call it a"creature" and do not touch it! lin: oh! im sorry! i won't do it again --- ed takes great offense to lins naturally odd and awkward demeanor, despite this behavior being clocked instantly by edelgard and why she pursued linhardt to begin with. because this behavior was exactly the same as bernadetta. lin apologizing sends an immediate flashback to bernies sorrows. it's made clear linhardt is just a bernadetta substitute. linhardt is not innocent either. ill make a comic later about it. but in the same way ed uses linhardt as a bernie substitute, linhardt is using edelgard as a caspar substitute in a very similar and unhealthy way. both widows realize this isn't good.
feeling an almost instant regret with raising her voice. edelgard actually apologizes to linhardt. lin doesn't seem to phased by it at all. after all, it's not like ed was that harsh, and it's not like lin even did anything wrong. to lin, this is no big deal. but to ed, she recognizes a behavior she shouldn't be acting up on to lin, and apologizes. in a sweet sort of way, they both eventually realize their faults in various ways. this one is one of many just with a holiday sort of spin ed: n-no! it's okay! ed: i shouldn't of raised by voice like that. im sorry! i get, uh--protective of that gift. lin: oh, um...okay! 🥱
