Framed and matted collage print of Ekua Holmes’ “Daddy’s Girls.” In the center of the piece a black woman, with her head aside and back to the viewer, hangs a sheet of laundry on a clothing line full of other pieces of laundry. She is against a background composed of green grass, blue picket fence, and outline of a red-patterned house. She is dressed in a yellow plaid tank and skirt with hoop gold earrings, and an orange bandana on her head. At her back on one side is the profile of a little girl holding an orange, yellow hoop and wearing a flower-patterned dress. Grabbing her other side is a younger girl, partially hiding, wearing a yellow dress. Both girls wear yellow ball hair ties in their hair.

Altars

Every girl growing into woman
needs a porch or stoop
or backyard-swing or altar.
Needs to learn how to be alone,
how to watch,
watch and wait.

Needs to learn how to be in harmony
with the music of her breath.

Every girl growing into woman
needs a teapot, a crockpot.
Needs to learn how to slow down,
slow down and wait.

Needs to learn how to steep,
how to take her time, simmer to a boil.

A gorgeous "semi-autobiographical collection of poems" by #RenéeWatson with lush and evocative illustrations by #EkuaHolmes. #BlackGirlYouAreAtlas is a celebration of culture, being a girl, and a call to action for embracing one's whole self. 📚👍🏻
