Bridging the Language Gap: Essential Resources for Newcomer EL Students Join Melissa Grinstead, a lead ESOL contributor to the work of AWB Education, as she dives into a crucial topic for all educators: effective resources for supporting newcomer English Learners (ELs). Addressing the daunting challenge of language barriers in content-area classrooms (math, science, social studies), Melissa shares a curated list of tangible tools, strategies, and supports.Discover a variety of invaluable resources designed to help ELs access rigorous curriculum content and bridge the linguistic gap. Melissa highlights: - The fantastic, comprehensive resources available on the Colorín Colorado website. - The benefit of checking out educational blogs, particularly mentioning the gems found on Larry Ferlazzo's site. - The professional development and assessment frameworks offered by the ELPA21 and WIDA websites. - PebbleGo and PebbleGo Next as game-changers for visual learners, providing linguistically simplified, academic content. - The Noun Project as a quick source for high-quality visuals and icons to supplement instruction. - The power of Newsela for providing content-area articles at adjustable Lexile levels, making differentiation practical for later elementary and secondary students. Melissa emphasizes that while tools are essential, patience and empathy are paramount as you support your learners. Remember to celebrate every piece of progress in their language acquisition journey.

It’s that time of year again!

Annual summative English proficiency testing is underway right now, and we wanted to provide some tips to help reduce test anxiety in your students:

🧘‍♀️ Build confidence: Provide students with positive reinforcement to help them approach assessment season with confidence. Share evidence of progress and growth, such as improved quiz scores and writing output. Consider presenting students with certificates of achievement once they’ve completed assigned learning modules.

🧘‍♀️ Strengthen inherent motivation: Most students have goals regarding their academic journey but may not know how these tie into their performance on the summative ELP assessments. Explain why doing their best and showing progress or reaching redesignation can help them reach their academic goals. Discuss the meaning of their domain scores and how to use these scores to identify areas for improvement. Also, work with your student to establish a tangible and realistic goal, such as, “I want to achieve a 3 this year,” or “I want to redesignate this year.”

🧘‍♀️ Teach techniques to calm anxiety: Deep or diaphragmatic breathing is a way to help the body avoid a “fight-or-flight” response to a stressful situation. It’s something students can practice during testing to reduce anxiety, and it’s a great skill to learn for coping with daily life stressors as well.

The Language Tree Online standards-based ELD curriculum builds the critical language skills that English learners will be assessed on this Spring when they take the ELPAC, WIDA ACCESS, NYSELAT, AZELLA, ELPA21, or the TELPAS. In addition, we provide online assessment preparation and practice to help students feel more prepared when approaching your state’s adopted summative English proficiency assessments. To quote my colleague, “you have to use English to learn English!”

Strong correlation between speaking scores on #ELPA21 assessment and Ss meeting overall growth markers. 77% alignment seen in Cincinnati Public Schools.

So…what impact can we have with #MLs and ALL students if we get them talking?
