The Heavy Weight of History: Seville Great House Layers of grey cloud descended over us, soft blankets that would roll down and then occasionally back again, to expose the dim wetness of the land. It was clearly not going to be a good day to go o…

Writing about #Ghana's amazing UN Resolution today and the soldiers building African houses at #SevilleGreatHouse brought memories of one visit I paid there on a gloomy day. The place has many ghosts.

They threw one hundred and thirty enslaved Africans into the sea to claim insurance money. Before we continue the story, please like comment and share with your friends and family. In Seventeen eighty one, the British slave ship Zong left the coast of West Africa with more than four hundred forty enslaved Africans aboard. Weeks into the voyage, disease spread and the ship's water supply began to fail. Captain Luke Collingwood made a decision history would never forget. He ordered about one hundred thirty enslaved men, women and children thrown overboard into the Atlantic For three days. Chained people were cast into the sea. Cries echoed across the water, then silence. When the Zong reached Britain, the crew faced no murder trial. Instead, the ship's owners sued their insurers for lost cargo in court. The debate wasn't about lives, it was about money. But abolitionist Granville Sharp exposed the story to the public. Pamphlet spread outrage followed. The Zong massacre became a symbol of slavery is cruelty, a turning point that fueled Britain's fight to abolish the trade forever. Share, believe, inspire blacks, be.

Post: Hundreds of enslaved Africans drawn into the ocean alive. Why ? Because the ship's captain wanted insurance money. This is the horrifying story of the Zu Masak in Seventeen Eighty one, The Zone. A British slave ship left Africa with over four hundred enslaved people double it's safe capacity, the conditions terrible, no space, little food, and this is spreading fast. People were dying and the captain, Luke Collingwood made a Chilean decision. Instead of losing money on six lives, he decided to draw them and claim insurance. One by one. Over one hundred and thirty men, women and children were drawn into the Atlantic Ocean screaming begging. But no one on that ship stopped it. And then the crew tried to cash it. They claimed a slave. People were lost at sea and demanded Shaw's money for guidance. But the insurers refused to pay. The case went to court, but it wasn't about model know. The trial was about whether the insurers should pay for damaged goods, not human lives. That's highly. To devalue black people. The court ruled that joining slipped people the body was just like doing a week's podcast. No justice, no punishment, nothing. But this horror wasn't forgotten. Abolitionist used the Zong massacre to expose the cruelty of slavery. It helped fuel the fight to end the slave trade. Today. Many still don't know this story But now you do Share this. They deserve to be remembered. Don't forget to follow on subscribe among Indian, African, and black histories. Share, believe, inspire blacks, be.

'Silent Participants' of Empire: the O'Rourke sisters of Saint-Domingue, Nantes and Wexford, 1788-1805. The history of the eighteenth and nineteenth century has for a long time been a very top down affair - ‘great men’ history, high politics and big events took the focus.
