Combining music and environmental activism, she has become a prolific writer and award-winning performer. Harmer co-founded the group Protecting Escarpment Rural Land (PERL), which fights mining operations that could severely degrade the geology within the Great Lakes. Harmer wrote Escarpment Blues and several other songs about the area, hiked the Bruce Trail through the region, and stopped to play her music – and talk about the threats to the escarpment – in bars, cafes, and concert halls along the way. Harmer produced a documentary, album, and a book about this tour. After a seven-year court battle, Harmer and PERL prevented the planned mining operation from starting up.
