Ara Jeretzian with his wife Maria, daughter Sofia, and son Ara, 1956. From the family archive of Ara Jeretzian.
A black and white studio portrait of a family of four, with two children in the foreground and their parents behind them. The young girl on the left has dark hair and a striped dress, looking directly at the camera. Next to her is a young boy with curly hair, wearing a light-colored shirt and smiling. Behind them, a man with a mustache wears a collared shirt and a suit jacket, while the woman to his right has dark, wavy hair and a floral patterned dress, with the man's arm around her shoulders.
Ara Jeretzian isn’t a widely known name. But in 1944 Budapest, as persecution closed in, he helped save around 400 Jewish lives… not with weapons, but by transforming an ordinary clinic into something far more powerful. A place where people could disappear and survive.
