#eubfws2024 is wrapping up now with closing comments from Matias Frosterus (National Library of Finland) and Michele Casalini (Casalini Libri and Share-VDE).
Next year's conference ( #eubfws2025) will be in Naples hosted by the University of Naples Federico II.

Kevin: MARC is limiting us [libraries], especially in the realm of multilingual, non-latin script resources. We are not reaping the benefits of more contemporary discovery systems if we stick with MARC #eubfws2024

Interesting question: How much will BIBFRAME cost? - How sustainable is it compared to MARC? - What's the cost of not implementing BIBFRAME? #eubfws2024

[If I have a set of vendor-supplied MARC records and map them to BIBFRAME with URIs from others' datasets (eg WorldCat Entities or Wikidata) who does the new dataset belong to?] #eubfws2024

An interesting point again about the need for library metadata to be open so that it can used as Linked Open Data (in BIBFRAME or another format) - [I wonder how this will work in practice for vendor-supplied or shelf-ready metadata; can libraries legally make this open?] #eubfws2024

What can we do to encourage our organisation to think about and move to BIBFRAME? - Just do it! Even if you have to start small with a pilot you will begin to build up the evidence to support a larger implementation [easier said than done] #eubfws2024

Niklas: There is more than one semantic web because there is more than one model for linked data. BIBFRAME should be a subway map not a detailed street map. #eubfws2024

Comment from Richard Wallis: What about non-library domains? Do they understand BIBFRAME? Probably not! It is obscure to those information organisations that use other data formats like schema.org #eubfws2024

A question about interoperability and maintaining openness, both open data and open infrastructure. Libraries need to ensure that their BIBFRAME data-sets don't end up locked inside the black box of a commercial system, it has to be Linked OPEN Data #eubfws2024

But there are different versions of implementation - you can still maintain you current (MARC) cataloguing workflows and systems and have BIBFRAME as the discovery experience, or you could implement root and branch with a view to cataloguing natively in BIBFRAME #eubfws2024

As more libraries implement BIBFRAME, the journey will get a better roadmap, so it will become less difficult as each library does it #eubfws2024

Shared URIs bringing data together needs to happen - not just people places etc but works expressions manifestations items. - we are on the cusp says Kevin #eubfws2024

Philip cautions against using Generative AI for things like determining subject headings or 'aboutness' it's not very good at this! #eubfws2024

Could an LLM help with adding a data element retrospectively? eg when you add a new label or URI could an LLM apply it to your whole dataset for you, so that you don't have to go back and apply it manually? #eubfws2024

And now AI and BIBFRAME... how could AI be married to our current data to provide natural language query/exploration? #eubfws2024

Interesting discussion regarding multilingualism in Linked Data and how to ensure bibliographic metadata is useful globally #eubfws2024

Search & discovery interfaces & user-journeys depend on the information need - how do we balance supporting a very specific 'known-title' search with a broader search on a research topic, when the user does not know exactly what they are looking for? Do we need more than 1 interface? #eubfws2024

Benefits yet to be realised?
Nancy: Wikidata is a great source of data but more domain specific data would be good; being able to link out to data specific to music for example - we need more linked open data sets to link to #eubfws2024

Kevin: BIBFRAME gives clarity to your library's data - that is a real benefit. MARC in a web browser is a textual enterprise, BIBFRAME is not just on the web it's part of the web, it is linked into it! #eubfws2024

Tiziana: as a community we need to focus on how to avoid creating new silos with our Linked Data projects! #eubfws2024

0 0 1 0

Nancy: How do you start with BIBFRAME?
1. Go to ShareVDE and look at discovery in BIBFRAME see the benefits.
2. Look at Sinopia & the PCC templates; see what it's like to catalogue in BIBFRAME
3. Got to Wikidata - learn to be a wikimedian

What do you like best about BIBFRAME?
Philip: "It's not MARC"
We don't want libraries to be left behind - we've been discussing the move to Linked Data for over a decade; we're already behind!

Insights into the practicalities of working with BIBFRAME
An interactive roundtable discussion with a panel of experts offering insight into working with BIBFRAME as well as outlining some of the most interesting challenges the adoption of BIBFRAME is facing. We welcome the questions and comments from all the participants and can also use this opportunity to return to some of the themes explored during the workshop.

Important considerations in developing the mapping included reusing, developing and publishing URIs for data values that are specific to Korean cataloguing in KORMARC #eubfws2024

In particular in KORMARC there is a separate type of resource in the Leader for Rare Books (Leader 06 = w) #eubfws2024

LoC's mapping for MARC21 to BIBFRAME does not work for KORMARC; the mapping of tags 245, 700, and 00X, 0XX of KORMARC needed to be modified to transform successfully to BIBFRAME #eubfws2024

Now a Lightning Talk from Mihwa Lee of Kongju National University on "KORMARC data mapping for BIBFRAME transforming"
KORMARC (Korean MARC) is very similar to MARC21 but there are differences in several tags, subfields and indicators.

The Wiki table for the project (mapping UNIMARC to BIBFRAME) can be exported as an external editable file for the project team. The plan will be to share the Wiki more widely in future #eubfws2024

The work is still ongoing, and new perspectives are expected to arise from the initiative, particularly in terms of its potential as a strategic tool for UNIMARC users and institutions. #eubfws2024

The decision to use Wikibase was guided by the fact it is community-owned and open. It is easy to use, with no need for local procedures for updating and maintenance. Entities can be easily downloaded from Wikibase in JSON ttl or RDF - & there's an active community offering support #eubfws2024
