Some griefs cannot be carried in translation. In the face of a child’s death, it is poetry—in Urdu and Punjabi—that holds what prose cannot.

English translation of a poem by Faiz Ahmed Faiz called Gulon Mein Rang Bhare. The gardens are filled with color—the spring breeze walks on. Come, walk with me, so the garden’s work may go on. O friends, the cage is desolate—say something to the morning wind! Somewhere, let God’s ocean today carry the beloved’s name. Let dawn, just once, begin from the corner of your lips. Let night, just once, flow from your fragrant, tousled hair. Great is the bond of sorrow—this strange heart is true. They will come, drawn by your name—consolers will walk through. What’s passed over me has passed—but O night of separation, Let my tears, in the end, prepare your path. Before the beloved’s presence, the records of madness are sought— With every thread of the tunic torn, let truth be taught. O Faiz, no true resting place exists upon the way— If you leave the alley of the Beloved, you walk toward the gallows.
While working on a story, I came across poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz. My mom translated the poem from Urdu to English for me... Gulon Mein Rang Bhare which she said translates to The flowers/gardens are filled with color.
I wish I could read/understand Urdu.
