PALAZZO MASSIMO ALLE TERME So at first this looks like the start of a sex scene like the ones we find in the other cubicula of this grand Roman house on the Tiber riverbank. Pale woman kissing dark-skinned man in a bedroom. But! This time the woman is holding a cup of wine, and she's kissing a somewhat androgynous figure who is barely reciprocating. The woman's clothes are slipping off her shoulder, her head tilts upward for the kiss, showing off her elegant white neck. But her fellow participant, who has short hair and a leafy crown, is fully dressed in a yellow-brown cloak with a long-sleeved dress underneath that goes down to the toes. An empty chair is prominent in the right foreground. But I don't think this is a Sapphic moment. Dionysus sometimes appears in women's clothing or even in female form. I think his divine impassivity hints that the woman is seeking comfort in wine. He will offer the comfort but only because she asks for it.
#FrescoFriday takes us back into the White Bedroom of the #domus of the #Farnesina in #Rome, where an illusionistic shuttered window opens into a boudoir where a woman whose dress is slipping off her shoulder is kissing... another woman? A lesbian moment in Agrippa's bedroom? #AncientBluesky 🏺

WALL FRESCO OF A DIVINITY, 30-20 BCE. PALAZZO MASSIMO ALLE TERME This beautiful female figure, elongated to impossible proportions like the Columbia Pictures logo lady, is on the wall of the main cubiculum of the ancient domus of the Farnesina, probably where Augustus' daughter Julia and her husband Agrippa slept. The whole room has frescoes with a white background, unusual for a bedroom. Spindly columns of vaguely Egyptian inspiration divide up the wall space. This figure is wearing a white peplos and stola against the white background, but she's far from camouflaged. Her head is slightly tilted, with an appraising expression on her face. Her crown is of leaves. In her right hand she holds a baton or other cylindrical object at shoulder level, her arm bent. The cylinder goes behind her shoulder. She stands on a low pedestal of blue-green which rests on a red ground. Is she a statue of a Muse or goddess?

WALL FRESCO FROM THE DOMUS OF THE FARNESINA, 30-20 BCE. PALAZZO MASSIMO ALLE TERME The mythology of Dionysus is so full of amazing and contradictory accounts that it would be worth exploring in detail. But suffice it to say that one strain of his infancy legend has Zeus send his son via Hermes to Mount Nysa, where he was raised by the Nysiads, nymphs who raised him with Silenus as his tutor. In this extraordinarily beautiful fresco from Cubiculum B of the domus of the Farnesina, a seated nymph at right is putting a wreath on the head of the baby, who is sitting on her lap. Her shoulders are bare and she may have been nursing Dionysus. Her iridescent drapery is in ochre over a blue dress. To the right are two standing nymphs, both looking off to the right with concern. Both are fully dressed with their heads covered. One looks rather old; the one in the front holds a fan. At far left a statuette of Zeus overlooks the scene. At right a thyrsus is leaning against a wall.

SCENE FROM A CORRIDOR IN THE DOMUS OF THE FARNESINA, 30-20 BCE. PALAZZO MASSIMO ALLE TERME A baffling scene from a myth or a ritual. Against a blue-green background, two women are walking toward the right. Both are wearing long plain chitons with red lines along the sides going from shoulder to hem. The shorter woman in the front seems to be wearing a shield on her head, convex side out, which is covered with leafy branches of laurel or olive. She holds another branch in her left hand and steadies the shield with her right. She looks a bit downtrodden. Behind her, at left, is a taller woman (?) whose face is missing, dressed identically. In both hands she holds a very strange tool in black, a straight diagonal line which expands upward like 3 sides of a rectangle before returning to its original line. A dotted line closes off the bottom of this shape, and I've interpreted this as a sort of jigsaw, possibly for cutting the branches the woman in front is carrying. I have no idea what is going on here. The internet offers no clues. But I *can* say with confidence that if you wear these outfits for Halloween, absolutely no one will guess who you are.
