Summer bikepacking in the Black River Wild Forest - Mckeever, NY A very hot summer weekend in the Black River Wild Forest. This was supposed to be a scouting trip but the heat Friday turned into even hotter Saturday. When you're sweating at the lean-to at camp in the shade, it's not a good day to ride. And yeah, I fully acknowledge I'm soft in the heat. I don't mind when it's minus 10F but 90F, I want to cry. Besides that, it's not fair or safe for my dog to crank in the heat. So we opted to do a much less invovled 17mi total weekend and basically just a bike camping trip vs a bikepacking trip. Sleeping outside, having a campfire, and just being away from the world is good enough sometimes. In fact, sometimes it's exactly what you need. *interesting note on the big foam pad up front. I forgot my Z-rest for the dog, so I cut out one of the base pads/e-pads from under the memory foam mattress in the van. My dog wasn't impressed and wouldn't use it. i woke up in the middle of the night sleeping on the floor of the lean-to with the dog on my airpad. Die Kamera blickt direkt in die kreisförmige Öffnung des Tretlagergehäuses, aus dem die Kurbelwelle und die Lager entnommen wurden. Zustand der Hardware: Im Inneren der Öffnung sind deutliche Spuren von massivem Verschleiß oder einem Defekt zu sehen. Es liegen metallische Trümmer, Bruchstücke und dunkles, verunreinigtes Schmiermittel am Boden des Gehäuses. Ein Teil eines zerbrochenen Kugelkäfigs oder zerriebene Metallspäne sind erkennbar. Technische Details: Der äußere Ring der Gehäuseöffnung weist eine Verzahnung auf (typisch für Patronenlager oder außenliegende Lagerschalen), die jedoch teilweise verschmutzt und abgenutzt wirkt. Rahmenzustand: Der umliegende Rahmen zeigt deutliche Gebrauchsspuren, oberflächliche Kratzer und eine Schicht aus Straßenschmutz. Links im Bild ist die Schweißnaht zum Unterrohr sichtbar. Perspektive und Licht: Die Aufnahme wurde mit Blitzlicht gemacht, was die metallischen Fragmente im dunklen Inneren hervorhebt und starke Schatten wirft.

Rensselaer County Groad Perfection Gravel at the edge of the Battenkill and Hoosic River Valleys in New Yorks Capital Region. While there isn't a ton of gravel riding in Albany (the capital and center of the capital region), the surrounding hill towns includhing those within Albany County offer amble gravel opportunities. This is my project Trek 7900. I got it for $250 as a rarely ridden garage queen with the plans of turning it into a drop bar gravel grinder and bikepacking/bike touring bike on the cheap. It's mostly stock though slowly that has become less and less (this photo is from 2021 a few months into the conversion when it was mostly stock aside from cockpit). The 2026 version added a new rear rim (36H), Avid Shorty Ultimate Brakes, a Tumbleweed Mini Pannier rear rack, and sometimes a Blackburn Designs front rack. The #groads of Rensselaer County NY are phenomenal. Mostly low traffic class 1 #gravel through rural areas dotted with farms. The terrain isn't too steep but you will get some short 20% climbs. It's punchy to say the least.

Bikepacking: Hector Falls - Hector, NY The ascent from Watkins Glen to Hector is fairly steep and on a winding narrow road. My oringial plans I wanted to visit the falls, but planned to turn east before the falls, to quieter roads, and enter the Green Mountain Finger Lakes National Forest, avoiding the busy road as we rode towards Ithaca. Unfortunately, we had to adjust plans due to a nagglng knee pain for my riding partner. The plan was as little elevation as possible to allow her to spin in a lower gear and not stress the knee. This sort of knee pain (tendon probably) is fairly common for new riders taking on a big load. Also didn't help the bike fit wasn't perfect (but get better throughout the week). The upside, we got to see Hector Falls before turning east and ascending one hill with 95% of the rest of the day dowhill or flat. I Love New York - bike touring / bikepacking edition | Flickr I think it's pretty popular to hate on NY, especially upstate NY, but for me, with 5M acres of public forest (37% of NY is public recreational land), whitewater, rock and ice climbing, snow, gravel, and some of most protected (a good and bad thing) land in not only the United States but the world (it's level one protection by the UN rating scale) I couldn't be happier. I get it. New York isn't as trendy for the outdoors as Colorado or some other states. I'm good with that. We've held two winter olympics here. The outdoors are a strong part of this state. Perhaps not a trendy part. Perhaps not what it's known for, but a strong anchor nonetheless. The US Commerce Department puts NY in the top 10 in virtually every outdoor category and the state generates $30B a year from outdoor recreation. I'm sure a lot of that is on the states 52 ski hills! But the Forest Preserve I mentioned brings $1B into the state on it's own. Outdoor recreation is a strong part of NY even if it's not the first thing folks think of. New York is beautiful, it's diverse, it has four seasons and the foliage is legit. NY produces the 3rd most maple syrup in the world (Quebec, VT, NY) so you know those reds from the maple trees are extraordinary. And while you can quibble about how good or bad the weather is, we have 8 months of temperate weather with 3 months of winter and about 6 weeks of hot and humid nastiness. I can live with that. Some places are sunnier, some are warmer, some have more snow (although NY also gets the most snow in the US on the Tug Hill plateau, so maybe not snowier, and it also has 3 of the snowiest cities in the world). You can surf on Lake Ontario, Erie and the Atlantic Ocean. New York has an insane amount of water. It has oceans and is on several of the largest lakes in the US and world (Ontario, Erie, Lake Champlain, and the Finger Lakes....Seneca Lake is so deep the Navy has a sonar test site there). I always comment the Adirondack Mountains are more a wilderness of waterways than a wilderness of mountains. That makes for some incredible boating. In fact the flatwater paddling in NY is the best anywhere east of the Boundary Waters. And the whitewater is can be spectacular as well. The Beaver, the Moose, the Grass, the Hudson and Black. NY has the 5th largest state Park system in the US while being only the 25th biggest state. And most of that 5M acres of public forest I mentioned before, that's not part of the state park system. Most public forest in NY are entirely free to recreate on and devoid of permits. And yet, most of the time, I don't see another human unless I put myself in a position to see other humans. That's pretty awesome for a state best known for it's largest city. So yeah, I Love New York!
