The final dungeon tries to retcon some time-loop gobbledygook that really didn't add much to the experience. But apart from that, I did enjoy some of the flavor text and oddities of the world, even if they didn't do much as a narrative whole.

The story's virtually non-existent, but if you go in with that expectation, it won't be too disappointing. The biggest hurdle is just how much of a blank slate the party is, with not even a mild attempt at characterization. They really are just an empty character-insert.

The world design is surprisingly effective, and I really liked how the world map opens up in manageable chunks. Later FF entries have been good at that, but I didn't expect them to do such a good job in the first one.

That said, the pixel remaster's QOL updates smooth out most of the rough edges, so I can imagine the original was far more of a slog. I never used the stat boosting, but even just the increases in the speed of battle and world traversal were a big help.

I actually found myself wishing for more of a challenge most of the time, with the last couple boss battles being the only fights in the game requiring much strategy beyond attacking and healing.

All in all, I enjoyed the experience far more than I thought. I went into it expecting a grindfest, but none of the battles really tripped me up, & by playing without a walkthrough, my levels scaled pretty naturally with the difficulty curve while wandering the world map.

I enjoy sidequests as much as anyone, but it’s honestly kind of nice to play an RPG without them. Like, the main quest took me to nearly every location on the map, I’m at the final dungeon, & there’s, at most, 3 optional things I could do(as opposed to a 20-hour list of chores).

I also enjoyed the little sidequest with Bahamut and the class upgrade you get as a reward. It gave the combat a much-needed jolt of life in these last few hours.

We’re prepped for Fern & have nothing planned all weekend, so there’s a good chance I’ll be wrapping this up today.

Also, I wish regular battles scaled better. 10 hours in, and I’m still encountering low-level enemies all over the place. 30ish% of battles aren’t worth the time because the EXP gains are so small.
