Tall white grayish smooth bark tree that goes tall with green leaves. But the roots are also long and above ground. Some are really tall. Photo by me. Blue sky day white white fluffy cloud. Green grass.
Big trees near me. This woolly fig has the most beautiful roots.

Harvest-time in Hoboken. Having my own garden AND being able to see Manhattan just across the river is pretty much all I ever needed. No narcissistic, hate-filled, sadistic, clueless half-wit is going to make me leave.

Fig Trees That Grow Rocks From Carbon Discovered in Africa #Science #Biology #Botany #FigTrees #CarbonSequestration #EnvironmentalScience
Drooping, fig laden branches of Lattarulla fig tree. After the photo I tied the branch up to prevent breaking. Figs are a great xeriscape crop for a climate like here, dry summer and where winters don't drop below about 19F. These should ripen in a few more weeks. I don't water the mature trees at all. Lattarula is a prolific producer of Summer figs (brebas) and fall figs (main crop). Unless top pruned, Lattarula can grow tall. My previous one reached about 20 feet tall, despite being cut back from time to time.
Figs developing on Brunswick fig tree. Not a reliable producer, but pretty much trouble - free. The figs that are produced are huge! And very sweet and juicy, and richly flavored. I wonder if it will produce better as the summers are hotter and longer. I also never water this tree (xeriscaping fruit tree). Brunswick doesn't grow too tall, but ranges sideways a lot.
Figs developing on "Hardy Chicago", also called "Chicago Hardy" fig tree. The summer crop almost always falls off, but then it produces a prolific fall crop. Moderate size figs, bigger than Celeste and smaller than Lattarula. They ripen before fall rains come, which can spoil other later varieties here. I've grown Hardy Chicago for 24 years. My original tree was cutting - grown, in my previous home in Vancouver, WA. I grew this tree from a cutting from that older tree, about four years ago. This will be its first crop. Hardy Chicago suffers less from freeze damage, compared to some others. But I've never lost a fig tree from freezing, as low as 15 F for brief periods. My previous Hardy Chicago reached about 20 feet tall. It didn't mind bring severely pruned to manage size.
My young Hardy Chicago fig tree from more distance. I cut it back a bit last winter, for more / lower branching. It reaches about 7' tall now.
Fig tree update. Lattarulla, my most productive summer fig. Brunswick, not very productive but big, juicy, super sweet. Hardy Chicago, my most reliable fall producer, grown from a cutting from my old tree at a previous home. 🌱 #figtrees #xeriscaping #gardening #figs

A fig tree with exceedingly droopy leaves.
Any #arborists in the studio audience, or anybody who knows about #figtrees? Our landscaper transplanted the fig tree and now it's looking like this. Should I water/not water? Snip the leaves off/leave them alone? Conflicting advice on the interwebses.
I have three fig trees I started from cutting last year. I live in Massachusetts so they had to be brought in for the winter. When I put them back outside should I plant them in the ground for the summer? Or larger pots?

Promising - looking buds on Lattarula fig tree that I started last summer via air-layering. It survived the winter just fine. It still needs some TLC this year, especially watering and protection from voles and deer. Lattarula fig has several other names, including White Marseilles. Probably French origin, but it's hard to say with fig cultivars. Ancient - Thomas Jefferson had them at his Virginia plantation. The variety is highly vigorous, survives freezes here (Maritime SW Washington State), produces a summer crop and fall crop, of sweet, mild flavored greenish-yellow figs with light beige flesh. Delicious in fig bars, jams, and barbecues. Low maintenance but requires pruning to stay within reach.
Swelling buds on young Petite negri fig tree. It's a good sign that it survived the winter and is growing. Petite negri fig goes by a number of names, and some may or may not be the same variety. Other names include Petite aubique or Violette de Bordeaux. It may originate in France. I bought the source tree twentyfive years ago, mail order. It is a lower vigor, naturally dwarfed variety. It survives the freezes here in Zone 8a, Battle Ground WA. During the worst winters, a few stem tips blacken, but that's not a problem. I think the flavor is among the riches of all home grown fig varieties. It's full of "figgy" flavor. There may be hints of strawberry flavor, too. Sweet, of course. The skin is black, the flesh is red. This year, the tree needs screening wire protection of the bottom trunk, for voles, and fencing from deer. I will give lots of water and a monthly or so dose of balanced fertilizer until July, when it will need to start hardening for next winter.
This was the air layered Petite negri fig start, in August. I had just cut it from the source tree. I potted it up, kept it in the shade for a few weeks, and watered it a lot. I cut off the top foot or so, due to the small root mass. I planted it in the garden in September. By that time, new roots had filled the one gallon pot. Rufus being playful.
The root mass on the air layered Petite negri fig tree, exposed. Impressive amount of roots, promising a healthy start. This was in August. I had started the air layering process in May. Cuttings also work, and are more portable, but air layering requires less attention compared to cuttings and produces an initially larger started fig tree.
The fig trees I started via air layering last summer, are waking up. They survived the winter. It's a welcome development.
Their parent trees are favorites but unfortunately located within a wildfire mitigation zone that I want to keep cleared. #figtrees #propagation #airlayering
