A handsome Red-Shafted Flicker, with it's spotted chest and black throat patch, proudly poses on the branch of a birch tree.
I didn't know #FlickerFriday was a thing.
Where I live, most Flickers are red & yellow shafted hybrids.

A female Northern Flicker perched on a curved tree branch, with its back to the camera and its head chicken to the side as if it's listening to something slightly above it.
For #flickerfriday I'm sharing a female with an intermediate color pattern - face coloration of a red-shafted but visible yellow-shafted wing feathers. #birds
A photo of a male northern flicker (Colaptes auratus) perched on the side of a brick chimney wall in the rain. It is a taupe-colored woodpecker with a gray head and a long dark gray beak, dark eyes, bright red cheek patches, black-tipped tail feathers, black barring across its back and wings, and a red spot on the back of its head. Its feathers are wet and windblown, giving it a somewhat bedraggled appearance. Its back is to the camera with its head turned to the right of frame as it clings to the red bricks of the chimney, with dark house siding visible in the background on the right side of the image. Drops of water are visible swirling in the air around it.
One more #BirdOfTheDay entry because #FlickerFriday: That time he wasn't going to let a little #weather keep him from the important business of adding character to our chimney.

Happy #FlickerFriday!
A female Northern Flicker hanging off the side of a suet feeder. Her back is to the camera with her head turned to the right and her tail at a 90 degree angle under the feeder. Her face is brown, she has a red crescent at the nape of her neck, and her tail feathers have yellow shafts = field markings of a Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker.
Rare bird alert (at least in the PNW) -- this female Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker has been frequenting my yard the last several days. I've seen the typical Red-shafted and an intermediate previously. Through the window shot as she is very shy. #birds #flickerfriday
Common flicker hanging from the bird feeder, which is weighted so squirrels can't empty the whole thing out in 3 minutes or less
Common flicker sitting on a shepherd's hook holding a suet feeder that's full of homemade suet.
Have these two finally paired up? Are these friendly sounds Please advise.
This is the first time I've seen two flickers on our feeder at once without one chasing the other away.

A photo of a male northern flicker (Colaptes auratus) perching awkwardly with one foot on a wooden platform mounted to a metal pole and one foot on a log style feeder also mounted to the metal pole. It is a sleek taupe-colored woodpecker with a gray face and a long dark gray beak, red cheek patches, a red spot on the back of its head, a large black chevron across its chest, black polka dots all over its belly, and red-orange tail feathers tipped in black. Its head is turned toward the left and small pale flecks of suet are flying off of its beak. The background is blurred dark greenery.
Happy Flicker Friday! He's #Eating. #BirdOfTheDay #FlickerFriday

Wrecking the camera. Another starling in the box. Getting scared off by one of the only other bigger birds in the yard. Chasing each other around the top of the fence. #FlickerFriday

A bunch of flickers (three? four?) fighting over the suet log. And you can see one of the @#%*! starlings that appear to have taken over the flicker nest box entering it in the background at the end. #FlickerFriday

Here's a stunning yellow-shafted northern flicker photo, for good measure. #FlickerFriday
Happy #FlickerFriday! Please enjoy one of the best northern flicker images I've ever seen, by Paul, who always takes beautiful photos.
Interlude male flicker usually will not allow this! #FlickerFriday
Female flicker finally got to sit on the log for a minute. #FlickerFriday
Happy #FlickerFriday! They are Dr. Seuss critters.
A photo of a male northern flicker (Colaptes auratus) perched on top of the cut-off end of a vertically mounted log in bright sunny weather, facing to the right of frame with its head slightly cocked and tilted upward. It is a sleek taupe-colored woodpecker with a gray face and a long dark gray beak, red cheek patches, a red spot on the back of its head, a large black chevron across its chest, black barring across its back and wings, and black polka dots all over its belly. The background is blurred greenery.
Happy Flicker Friday from one of my beloved interludes.

This male interlude flicker always chases this female red-shafted flicker away from the log feeder, like just now. Then he sits on it like this. Like this!! And she just watches from the fence instead of moving to one of six other suet options in our yard.

This beautiful green-barred woodpecker, ๐๐ฐ๐ญ๐ข๐ฑ๐ต๐ฆ๐ด ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ค๐ฉ๐ญ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ด, is also known as a green-barred flicker, because it's a flicker. That's why it's so cute. #FlickerFriday
A photo of the fantastic northern flicker (Colaptes auratus), a sleek taupe-colored woodpecker with a gray head and tan face, dark eyes, a long dark gray beak, bright red cheek patches, a large black chevron across its chest, black barring across its back and wings, black polka dots all over its belly, a red spot on the back of its head, and red-orange tail feathers outlined and tipped in black underneath. It is a male perched on the top of a wooden trellis facing toward the left of frame with its beak open mid-call, and it has a little bit of reddish dirt on its beak from pecking in the ground where it likes to hunt for ants. The background is blurred greenery and pale cloudy sky.
It's Flicker Friday and he's my favorite and the cutest. And I used my one good bird flying over water photo two days ago, so. #BirdOfTheDay #cute #FlickerFriday.

A female Northern Flicker peering out from behind a small diameter tree trunk. Her right eye is visible but her beak is hidden. About half of her black bib and speckled breast are showing. Her striped tail feathers are barely visible.

Ok, where's Waldo? My old eyes did not see the female Flicker (of the high desert) hiding in the dead cholla, but my wife spotted her so I clicked the whole cactus first...
Put my glasses on, and then found the Flicker peeking at us with one eye while hiding with her polka-dots on the dead cholla. Sneaky.
DYK polka-dots are great camo? Ask me how I know.
Pic 1) Ok, so hiking the cholla patch, wifey stops me and whispers "Right THERE, don't ya see her?" pointing at a dead cholla. Me: Nope. But I click the cholla anyway.๐ต
Pic 2) Put my glasses on. THEN, I see her. ๐ค๐
